Prince Charming League

Anthony Rizzo owners are probably feeling a little gypped right now. Rizzo's 16/63/.365 numbers made him look like a can't miss product. And maybe he won't miss. But, it takes kids longer to adjust from the Prince Charming League than other minor league organizations.

The Prince Charming League is the Pacific Coast League. I call it Prince Charming because all the hitters look so good there and I like the PCL thing both have going for it.

Since getting the call from the PCL, Rizzo has turned in a 1/1/.161 for San Diego. The adjustment from that league just seems tougher for most ballplayers.

Remember David Cooper?

He was up earlier in the year as the Blue Jays dh. He had a 1/5/.121 in 33 at bats for Toronto. He now leads the PCL in hitting with a .386 average.

Wily Mo Pena, a guy everyone knows here, loaded with power and strike outs is 21/63/363 in the PCL. Pena hitting .363 at any level scares me. He's just not built that way. But, the league is full of hitters paradises and some teams prefer to have their young pitchers go from AA to the Majors in order to escape Pacific Coast League.

Some of the other top hitters of the PCL are Eric Young Jr, Josh Fields (yes, the same Josh Fields who has washed out since his rookie year), Mike Carp, and Eric Thames. All have seen the Majors, all have a tough time crossing that bridge from Prince Charming to the Promise Land.

Eric Hosmer was hitting an astounding .439

Before being called up, he was 19 for 31, or a .612 batting average.

Brandon Wood and Sean Rodriguez are valedictorians of the PCL. 50 home run hitters there, Wood is barely clinging to MLB status, while Rodriguez has been a utility man.

We're all looking for that player that'll put us over the top come Sunday. If he comes from the Pacific Coast League, we should temper the expectations.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Rizzo looked really good in his first few games, extra base hits, walks, good pitch selection ... then the petco slime engulfed the pcl shine.
