Phillies rip off the Astros --- again

Post by TOXIC ASSETS » Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:51 am

I'm beginning to wonder if Ed Wade is still on the Phillies payroll somehow. Phillies get Hunter Pence in exchange for two guys in A bill right now? I thought for sure that Domonic Brown would have been part of the trade, but he wasn't. Really can't beleive that Wade would have made this deal.

The Stros are years away from competing. Pence is getting expensive already, they won't be ready to compete before he is a free agent either. He's probably not good enough to build a team around, so I think dealing him was the right move. They got the 18th and 21st best prospects in the game according to Keith Law, and at least top 40 in most scouting circles...what do you expect from a guy who's never had 100 runs or 100 RBI's, never hit 30 hr's or stole 30 bases? That seems like a good haul for that type of player. Perhaps they could of gotten players closer to the majors, but they are too far away from competing to worry about that. It is a little high risk, high reward considering Cosart and Singleton are in high A. The incoming owner wants that payroll low to start, Pence is going to be pricey in arbitration.

It's a needed move for Philly, but not terrible for the Stros. People are being too hard on Wade because he's Ed Wade and made some questionable moves in the past...but this isn't one of them. Who really knows what the other offers were.

But I am a Philly fan from day one, so I'm happy. We got who we wanted and control for a few years. The Phils are built to win now and have a few year window, so they can't afford to wait on Cosart and Singleton. Good deal for both.

The Bourn trade is 1000000x worse than the Pence trade. Absolute slop in return

In the meantime, Jim Hendry stands pat with players who have contracts ending at the end of the year and a team down the crapper.
