Championship Season

I took a look at the draft of Bob Enzyte. I wanted to see what propelled him to the championship. I looked at his league, his draft, his pickups.

Las Vegas league 4 was a shark tank, loaded with sting rays, electric eels and any other deadly creatures you can imagine...some top of the line NFBC players who have a proven track record of success.

The Champ picked 14th, a tough slot this year. Greg has already posted his draft but here it is again:

1 Kemp

2 Wright

3 Verlander

4 BJ

5 Grandy

6. Greinke

7 KJ

8 K Rod

9 Lind

10 Romero

11 Cordero

12 Chacin

13 Snider

14 A Escobar

15 Chipper

16 Moreland

17 Asdrubal

18 Kubel

19 Bedard

20 Anibel Sanchez

21 Y molina

22 Cecil

23 Lowrie

24 Farnsworth

25 Wolf

26 Minor

27 Doumit

THis draft is basically what you would expect from a championship season, essentially nailing the top breakout guys: Kemp, Verlander, Grandy, Asdrubal and getting some nuggets late: A Sanchez at 21 and Y molina at 21.

Lindy over drafted guys he liked. Kemp was mostly going in middle of 2nd due to mediocre 2010 and Lindy took a chance on him at 14. I think Granderson was more of a 6th rounder.

Y Molina is a puzzle. I am surprised in a league with such top players that he lasted until round 21. Here is a guy with solid production across the years.

I would love to hear Lindy's thoughts on Asdrubal who came out of nowhere to be a top 3 SS. My guess is that this was a pick that came with a lot of luck.

Anibel was the 5th starter taken and not until round 20. This ultimately gave Lindy a solid top 5 sp. This minimizes the fishing on FA wire, where he never really struck gold with sps.

The champ's FAAB was not what you would expect. There was not a ton of help that he got off the wire. His biggest dollar pick up was Danny Duffy in May for 322. Other then that, Lindy missed on all the sexy rookies like Hosmer, Lawrie, Jennings et al. He never added a SP that could be considered a real help. More often he got guys who chipped in a little here and there.

In week 1 he added Willie Harris for 1. Significant pickups for others that weeks were Ogando for 46, Harrison for 7 nd Lohse for 13.

In week 2 he added Ryan Roberts, chen and Bastardo. Ryan Roberts would have been huge but I think he must have been dropped too soon. Santos CHWs closer was added for 4 by another team.

Over the next 5 weeks, he added L hernandez, Ty Ross, J Turner, while others added Hosmer 411, Madson, 253 Vogelson 7, Helton 53

On May 22 Lindy added Duffy for big money. It was the only big money he spent all year.

June 12 was one of the penultimate FAAB periods. Available that week were Rizzo, J Weeks, D Gordon. Those who made right call here, had a gold mine in the younger Weeks, who went for 69 to Rizzo's 281.

On June 19, Lindy got Kotchman, who stayed on his team for remainder of season. Kotch would have a very nice 2 months or so for the Champ in average category.

If you saw the remainder of the pickups, you would wonder how Lindy won:

Outman twice, Brayan Pena, Rubby DLR, Massett, Buck.

On July 17 he nailed Izzy who helped probably for 2 weeks. Other then that there was a ton of very ho hum types: Minor, Marquis, M Adams, y Alonso, Aceves, Rivera.

Down the stretch, Lindy had money where others did not. He was able to do nicely fr final week or two, nailing M Moore, Delgado, Pacheco to fill the catching spot that was never filled well, Craig.

In my mind this was a team that was built by a fine draft that left the team not needing a ton of help

Kyle Farnsworth in the 24th round proved to be a huge selection. It turned out to be his third closer to start the season and eventually closer #2 when Lindy's second closer, KRod, was traded to Milwaukee. The league that KJ Duke is in (LV2) had Farnsworth selected in the 18th round. I know personally it is not fun chasing closers on the waiver wire, it takes many FAAB dollars to land one for a 2 week rental while the main closer is on the disabled list.

Excellent breakdown Schwks. I know Lindy tries to hold that FAAB cash for longer than most. During his first title run, I think he needed an upgrade at MI and he was real happy that year when Stephen Drew became available. I was actualy of the belief this season that Mr Hinkelman was making a big mistake at times by not utilizing his FAAB to help fill some holes after the all star break. He was squeezing this dollars tighter than one of our CDM buddies does his own dollars. ( no names, but the "crew" knows him as a local ) However, Lindy stuck to his drafted squad - I think lots can be attributed to the decimals he put down with his five core starters and he has learned over time that balance in power and speed is a necessary evil when building his Offense. Super job, but his championship core foundation was in place when he left the draft table in March. A lesson we should all take seriously as we prepare for Draft Day 2012 .

I actually don't know if there a ton of lessons to be learned from reviewing the Bob Enzyte team in a vacuum. You can say yeah you need to draft well...but that is not a solid lesson....everyone seeks to draft well, and to nail a few breakout guys late.

Unlike Steve last year, he did not have great success via the free agent wire. His success was nailing guys in the late teens and 20's that would become roster staples, and then filling in with largely mediocre one category guys(Kotchman comes to mind).

Lindy built his nucleus with upside but not with a ton of risk. He went for two established closers, and waited on catchers. He grabbed two stud SPs relatively early.

I think that last year Steve's draft was not as good but he nailed a ton of helpful free agents. So any lesson re draft versus working the wire is garbled at best.

Certainly Farnsworth at 24 was a huge find. I am thinking it allowed him flexibility to overplay saves for first 3 /12 months while K Rod was still a Met and then gave him a 2nd closer thereafter. He probably got 7-10saves out of the Izzy/Accosta plays as well.

What is interesting regarding the FAAB was the way he saved his money, opting to stay away from the heavy bidding on sparkly rookies.
