For me the next baseball season starts when I arrive at the Arizona Fall League Symposium and pick up my 2012 Bill James Handbook from industry veteran and friend Steve Moyer. Seeing the prospects in sunny Phoenix and reading the projections in the Bill James Handbook on the flight home is a ritual that has gone on now for the last decade or more.

This year's Bill James Handbook is once again the perfect tool to kick off the season. Every player is listed alphabetically in easy-to-read formats and there are park factors, manager factors, lefty-righty splits and more in one book. The Bill James projections also kick things off with the first set of 2012 projections from one of the best in the business.

For $25, it's a winner in my book.

I looked at a lot of the projections this last week and will post some insights on this thread here. Very interesting, indeed.

Just ordered my copy! I ordered it for the first time last year and got a lot out of it!

If I remember correctly they had Ryan Kalish-OF-BOS down for a CRAZY 2011 Stat Line that of course didn't work out.

Bill James throws a very good dart at the board and surely gets your brain racing for draft time!

I'm going through the Bill James Handbook and looking at some hitter projections. A few that caught my eye include:

** Domonic Brown: .275-19-71-24 with79 runs. This is based on Brown getting 510 at-bats. Bill James had a big projection for Brown last year too, but he finished with only 184 MLB at-bats. I'm surprised that he's back on Brown's bandwagon.

** Lorenzo Cain: .284-10-58-22-73. If the Royals give him the starting CB job it's possible, but that's a lofty projection.

** Zack Cozart: .256-13-50-16-71. Could happen if he starts at SS for the Reds.

** Adam Dunn: .220-20-55-1-48. I agree.

** Mat Gamel: .282-19-72-3-63. He could be a sleeper pick if he becomes the Brewers' new starting 1B.

** Paul Goldschmidt: .266-32-99-9-93. Bill James is on the Paul Goldschmidt Bandwagon!! ALL ABOARD!!

** Dee Gordon: .270-0-30-42-72. 42 SBs!!! ALL ABOARD!!

** Eric Hosmer: .311-23-92-14-86. NIIIIIIIIIIICE!!

** Desmond Jennings: .267-17-65-47-116. MVP, MVP, MVP!!

** Brett Lawrie: .284-22-75-30-92. Can the Brewers trade Marcum back for him? ;)

** J.D. Martinez: .297-16-90-10-67. Would be a solid season.

** Jesus Montero: .289-26-830-65. ROY WINNER!!

** Mike Moustakas: .278-18-84-3-68. That might even be low.

** Buster Posey: .304-19-80-5-71. Predicting a full comeback for Posey.

** Ben Revere: .280-1-37-45-66. Judy, Judy, Judy.

** Jemile Weeks: .279-4-51-28-68 vs. Rickie Weeks: .262-22-62-12-95

All very interesting. Thoughts anyone?

830 RBI for Montero ought to seal the deal for ROY ;) . Some interesting projections there. Ah....baseball is so much better than football! I can't wait.
