Ortiz or Tease?

The Astros move to the American League will change the landscape a bit for drafts next year and beyond.

The immediate effect is that A.L. West competitors get a little boost from having one of the weakest teams from N.L. coming over.

For the future, we may downgrade the designated hitter even further. In the past, interleague games were played in blocks. It was a curse owning David Ortiz, knowing that he would be playing in a N.L. park for a week.

With the new deal, the Utility position takes a larger hit. Boston could be in Philadelphia the last three days of the season with your fantasy league title on the line. Timing is everything, and that timing would be unfortunate.

Designated Hitters themselves, are becoming less common. Ortiz, Butler, Guerrero, Damon, Posada, Montero, and Hafner among the most prominent for the upcoming year. Most teams prefer the active player such as the Rangers use of Michael Young last year, who designated hit most of the time, but managed to qualify at two positions too. Or the Angels use of rotating four outfielders works well for them before Bobby Abreu collects his first social security check.

How scheduling of interleague games will be done in 2013 and beyond has not been determined as yet.

72 games games with division rivals, 60 games vs league mates, and 30 interleague games, would be the best numerish guess.

This schedule would increase interleague games by 12 per team. Meaning six more games where Ortiz and his like would be riding our fantasy pines. Factor in what could be devastating timing, the designated hitter takes a greater hit in 2013 and beyond.

It won't happen, but there was never a better time than now (or 2013 really) to end the travesty that has been the desecrated hitter. That would solve all such problems.
