Weird Science Wins Week 8 Prize
Kevin Moss had one central plan heading into the NFBC draft: Hitting, hitting and more hitting.
It’s taken some time for that plan to work to his team’s benefit, due mainly to a sluggish start from All-Star Manny Ramirez. But last week, his offense exploded and that carried Moss’ Weird Science team in Las Vegas 8 to a first-place finish in the weekly standings.
Weird Science hit a robust .324 last week, led by Michael Young (.435), Raul Ibanez (.421), Phil Nevin (.391-2-9) and David Ortiz (.360-2-8). Moss’ team also received strong pitching from Tim Hudson (2 wins, 1.20 ERA), Andy Pettitte (1 win, 0.00 ERA), Trevor Hoffman (3 saves) and Ryan Dempster (2 saves).
“My draft day strategy was to focus on hitting in the early rounds, draft one top-tier closer along with top set-up guys in the later rounds with the hopes of at least one of them claiming a closers job,” said Moss from Weston, FL. “Chris Carpenter was my key pitcher to get, as I guessed he would be undervalued in most leagues, I drafted him in the 10th round, and (Tim) Hudson in the fifth to sure up my pitching.
“The season has started off slow for my team. Manny Ramirez, my top pick, ha started off slow, but I know what’s down, must come up, and what's up, must come down, and Manny is down, so I’m expecting big things from him from here on out. I’ve had a couple minor injuries with Woody Williams and John Thomson that have hurt me because I didn’t draft many starters, but there's always the waiver wire.”
Last week’s strong performance not only helped Weird Science finish first in the weekly standings but also make a strong move up in the overall standings.
“My team made a huge move in the standings last week, from about 160th or so to 66th overall, so this gives hope to the teams still lagging behind,” Moss said. “Since I was behind in Wins and K’s I bid on two pitcher getting two starts with favorable matchups - Kyle Lohse and Eric Milton. Their four starts netted me three wins with a respectable ERA and WHIP, even with Milton getting beat down by the Pirates on Sunday. Dustin Hermansen has been my biggest bargain and was a tremendous help and my hitting is finally living up to expectations.”
Needless to say with a first-place finish and a move up the overall standings under his belt, Moss is enjoying the NFBC.
“The NFBC is the premier fantasy game out there and takes priority over every other league I am in,” said Moss, who is married and works as a propery manager. “I appreciate the time and effort that Tom and Greg have put into establishing the leagues and see nothing but continued growth. I am also competing in the NFBC Ultimate Auction and was very pleased with the way the auction was run, and I will be a team owner in that league as well as the main event for life.”
