Just thought I would start the post and perhaps take a contrarian view, but here goes.
Simply put - Do what you think is right. There is nothing stragic about losing money.
No one (and I do believe no one) will bail on this even next year if the overall prize is $75k or seecond place isnt $8k+.
Ultimately, you have to decide how you want to market the event next year. Do you want to flash the $100k, say something like we paid out $125k in cash and prizes...etc
Personally, I am in favor of reducing the grand prize to $75k and paying the $25k to other top finishers. Somehow I think you should guarantee second and thrird overall $5k no matter how you go (in case they finish second in their league). Either way - no need to call me and I'll support whatever decision to make.
You wont make everyone happy, so just feel good you made the right business decision. Thanks for caring soo much.
