Balance and diverse skills. Those were the qualities John Hogan and Mark Dickter were looking for in terms of hitting when it came to Draft Day in the NFBC this season.

Those qualities paid off handsomely for the duo’s SB PhillyCheeseSteak team in our event last week.

Thanks to strong weeks from Hideki Matsui (.455-3-10), Jimmy Rollins (.423, 3 SBs), Raul Ibanez (.385), Melvin Mora (.364) and Mark Teixeira (.364-4-8) SB PhillyCheeseSteaks finished first in Week 11 with 2,532.5 points in New York League 7.

The team also received strong pitchign from Mark Mussina, who won a pair of starts. Dontrelle Willis continuing his strong season with 1 win, a 0.64 ERA and 9 Ks.

Hogan has a baseball background, having played collegiately at Drexel University. He said he and Dickter began their Draft Day plan with one simple goal:

"Our strategy was to pick the best hitter in the first round," said Hogan, a 45-year-old purchasing agent for the School District of Philadelphia and a married father of three daughters.

"Then we wanted to get a balance of seven or eight hitters and two or three pitchers of the first 10 picks. All our picks are players that help in all areas early and then fill in needs later on.

"Our first five picks - Texiera, Jim Rollins, Mora, Matsui and Rich Harden and our later picks of Aaron Rowand, Jaque Jones, Shannon Stewart and Raul Ibanez fit this mold."

Hogan and Dickter, an internal auditor consultant, not only finished first in Week 11, but they are ninth in the overall standings after finishing 38th last year. Needless to say they're enjoying the NFBC quite a bit.

"We enjoy the league very much, especially competing with the experts," Hogan said. "This league's set up (such as free-agent blind bidding) allows us to do this. We plan to continue to grow with the league from sponsors to whatever.

"With some luck (which is needed because there is a lot of baseball knowledge on all the teams) we hope to compete all year and be able to uphold the prestige that is being presented by the NFBC and all of the team owners."
