Let me start by saying that I am not claiming that the Mathis League owners are any better (or worse) than any other league. In the Mathis League, we had the advantage of hindsight, and as a result, you would imagine that our numbers would be better than the numbers in the regular competition.
At least, I imagine that knowing what a player has already done for just over half the season makes it easier to compile better numbers as a team. Conversly, of course, we don't have the sleepers, but I think that is outweighed by the fact that we don't get any stinkers for the first half, either.
To demonstrate that point, the overall leader for each category in the Mathis league, if each such team were competing in the overall competition, would be:
1st in ERA;
1st in WHIP;
3rd in RBI;
5th in Saves;
6th in average;
6th in Runs;
9th in SB;
10th in Home Runs;
12th in K's; and
12th in Wins.
Considering that there are 20 leagues in the overall competition, I doubt that you would find the leader of each category in any one league in the top 12 in all ten of the categories, in 1st place in 2 categories, and in the top 6 in six of the ten categories.
Again, that doesn't make the Mathis owners better or smarter or anything else, it just means that we have the hindsight advantage.
All that being written, I took the Doughboys (overall competition) numbers, WITHOUT THE ASSISTANCE OF HINDSIGHT, and plugged them into the Mathis League, just to see how the Doughboys would be doing.
Well, the Doughboys would presently earn:
13 points in average;
15 in runs;
11 in home runs;
11 in RBI;
14 in steals;
7 in ERA;
9 in Wins;
11 in WHIP;
14 in K's;
and 12 in Saves.
Overall, Doughboys would have 117 points. By the way, the leader in the Mathis League has 96.5 points.
What does it all mean? Probably not a whole lot, except that the Doughboys in the overall competition is one fantastic team.
Just one man's opinion.

Tell me about it, I've been watching the ass end of the Doughboy's freight train all season...
What are the current ytd stats in each of those categories, Buster?
Keep in mind that being able to rotate guys in and out makes a difference, too - plugging in 2 start guys or sitting/playing the right guy can make a difference over a half a season

Yes, I considered the rotating factor, but even with that, the Mathis League stats are still generally better than those of the regular season.
At present, here are the leaders in each of the categories:
Team BA
The Doughboys II 0.2895
Team R
Team Mathis 790
Team HR
CREATiVESPORTS Buster (Mid) 202
Team RBI
The Hilton Sisters 776
Team SB
Team Eroh, II 133
Team ERA
The Hilton Sisters 2.436
Team W
Team Eroh, II 77
Team WHIP
The Hilton Sisters 0.996
Team K
Team Ferrari 851
Team SV
Team Kaye 84

Want to be careful how I say this because I mean it is as a compliment. There team on paper is no better than most in the top 100. They obviously did a great job in drafting to get balance and react to the overall draft trends of the league. To be that dominant they have also had to use free agent dollars well.
Competition at this level is won in minor moves during the season and in rounds 10-25 of the draft.
I am impressed by the fact of their wire to wire dominance. It will be interesting to see at this level of competition if someone is able to sustain that for 6 whole months.
Any chance Doughboys is from Modesto California if so I met them at pre draft party?
Another question just for debate- what place do you have to be in right now to have a chance at the top spot? What about top 3?
My best guess is you need to be top 8 to have a shot at number one right now and top 25 for a shot at 3 but this is my first year and bjoak has not been teaching me regulary lately.

Not that anyone has a real idea of what it takes for a top 3 or top 8 finish but, undaunted, I will give you my guess.
For a top three, you had better be in the top 15 right now for any real chance and top 10 is much better. The problem may not be catching the current 1st, 2nd or 3rd place teams but instead passing over a dozen or so teams ahead of you and also contending for those spots. My best guess is that the top three final teams are in the current top 10.
For a top 8 finish, I would think 25th or better right now would do.
One-third of the season remains so there is time to move. I do feel that moving up will be much harder than dropping like a rock.

I am not so sure. There are certainly categories like BA that are very hard to move (up or down) at this point. But take Whip and ERA. 3-4 bad 7 run outings would still make a significant difference.... This is not to be down on Doughboys, they have been fantastic, it is just there still is alot of room for change...
Also, for fun, I looked at Wins. If you see the data below, there are 87!!!! positiongs between 63 wins and 58!!! So if someone has a bad stretch of no wins, that is a killer (it also goes to show the value of a killer starting pitcher - rare as those are!)

Although I have currently fallen back to 33-35th or so in the overall, I have no question with one good week I can be in the top 10 overall. This is primarily based on the fact I have several categories where I'm right behind the 'mass' and points can be made up very quickly in batting average, saves, etc.
I know have Fernando 'save a night' Rodney, so that's clearly enough

I was studying the LV Draft 7 to see how Doughboys 'did it' and it struck me that Doughboys team is kind of interesting in that really he is winning through most of his top picks doing what was expected. He doesn't have Brian Roberts or Derrick Lee who have way surprised people (well maybe Roger Clemens and Chad Cordero), but then of his top 10 only Pavano has fallen apart. I know that my own draft of Boones, Sosa and Woods killed me (though I got Woods in the 9th).
And he was smart enough to pick up players like Patterson and Nomar (I can't believe he got dropped) along the way

I really don't expect much from Nomar - do you?
I felt strong up the middle infield so I put in a token bid on Nomar but wasn't worried about him.

I don't expect much, but the upside is very considerable. Nice to have additional potential available when you are leading things.

I know what you mean about chasing doughboys all year I have been chasing moneymaker in NY#5 all year Crazy being 5th over all but 2nd in League 9-10 points back I do agree that there is plenty of time to get into either top 10 or even top 3 over all depends where you stand over all Wins is the best category to move up I think I was 193rd Thats where I get frustrated Had Webb pitch a gem but bull pen blows it You would think based on having Beckett Burnett Halladay Webb Loiaza Capuano Lowry on fire right now Halsey and Tomko to choose from I would have more Last couple of weeks I bench 1 of my legit closers whether Brazoban or Wickman to go for starts I think depending on where you stand in league as well as overall might be wise to kick a talented player back to a team that has a chance to pass either doboys or in my case moneymaker back into FA pool For example I l;ead by 4-5 saves in my league There are 2-3 teams that could overtake maker if they had another closer I have Cordero Wickman and Brazoban also had Farnsworth still cant figure out why Tigers got rid of him Me and Pudge or on that same page Might kick Brazo back with the hope that team that picks him up takes points from maker Just a thought But I do agree with you that 1 or 2 good nights for you hitting wise can move you up
