What if it is less than 300 teams

Post by viper » Mon Feb 09, 2004 4:22 pm

I hate to broach this subject but I feel I need to. Last season the WCOFB tried a baseball league and put forward a prize list for 300 teams (or thereabouts). They had 45 teams and the prize list was cut a lot. That was understandable as they were not running a charity. Not knowing how many teams are entered and realizing that many teams will join in the last 10 days, where do you expect to reduce the prize fund if the league end up with 75 or 90 teams or 105 teams? I would prefer that the smaller 15 team leagues retained their payoffs but suspect they would be hit hardest in order to keep the large grand prize. I'm curious as to what might happen.

Hey Viper, you didn't broach this subject... it's been covered on this very board already several different times.

I know you must have felt brilliant figuring you're the first one to think of this... lol ;)

Just giving you a hard time - scan down on this list for a topic titled 'Grand Prize' where Greg does his best to explain the prizes are guaranteed... gotta take a man at his word.

See you in Vegas,

It's a fair question, but I think it's obvious there's no turning back now. We are moving toward our goal even before the start of spring training and several people are signing up each day. All is good and believe me we are well ahead of where the WCOFB ended last year. But just to reiterate, the prize structure for individual leagues will not be adjusted no matter how many teams we finish with. It's our job to get enough teams to guarantee the grand prize and we are well on our way to accomplishing that. Think positive my friend, think positive.

So Greg - any chance of a ballpark figure as to where you are now?

As you know, I've posted every new member since early January and we had about two dozen signups before Leaderboard Sports started that great thread. We are nearing 100 overall and have many, many others who have committed to me but don't have their applications in yet. Yes, we also expect a large rush after March 1 and feel confident that each city will draw what we've projected, but I don't want anyone to be left out and hope there isn't a mad rush on the last day.

One point I want to make right now is that I truly believe the NFBC is making history with this event. Very few people thought there were enough baseball die-hards to create an event of this size and magnitude. It was done in football, they said, but baseball is a different animal. Well, to me that was just nonsense. I helped to start Fantasy Baseball Magazine in 1989 when baseball represented 90 percent of the fantasy sports industry and I'm happy that football has blossomed and surpassed baseball in popularity. But baseball has a great die-hard fan base and with an older demographic than football, this event should have no trouble reaching our goal of 300 teams since we are bringing the drafts to you, not forcing you to fly to our event.

I strongly believe that we will look back on this time and say we accomplished something special when the doubters were out there. We are working hard right now to land sponsors for this event, to land more companies to provide giveaways for our goodie bags, and to work with more industry companies to promote our event. We'll have announcements soon on all of that. We have ads in several fantasy baseball publications this year, but more importantly we now have more than 25 different industry companies promoting the NFBC as part of a promotional agreement I've worked with them.

This truly is the industry's main event and we'll prove that over time. I swing for the fences when I come up to bat and we have every intention of hitting a grand slam in 2004. Nothing that has happened over the last three months since we announced this has changed my mind, either. Everything is positive, so we look forward to Draft Day with 300 teams competing for the $100,000 grand prize and several Auction Leagues bidding in each city. The doubters can wait 'til next year if they'd like, but by then history will already have been made.

Just telling me 98 would have been sufficient Greg. ;)

Great post Greg. Rest assured that there are a lot of us who greatly appreciate your efforts and are looking forward to being a part of something this big for years to come. It is obvious you are doing things the right way. I have played a lot of fantasy games over the years but I've never been involved in one that was run anywhere nearly as well as this one appears to be. I can't wait for Vegas!

The WCOFB Bulletin Board implies they are only around 20 teams at this point. Shows where the players want to play. I hope my possible partner wants to play. I would like taking a trip to the Big Apple but can't really afford going on my own.
