conditional vs straight FA bid

Post by Quahogs » Sat Apr 03, 2004 5:56 am

Would there be any difference in the result of these 2 separate FA bids ? The first ex. is a conditional setup

ex 1) 1. Add D.Stark $10 drop A.Cook

b. Add S.Elarton $9 drop A.Cook

c. Add D.Neagle $8 drop A.Cook

ex 2) 1. Add D.Stark $10 drop A.Cook

2. Add S.Elarton $9 drop A.Cook

3. Add D.Neagle $8 drop A.COok

In my eyes the result would end up the same. But maybe I'm missing something. If not would there be a reason for doing it one way vs the other ? Thanks

My understanding is that you would have to use option 1. This is because in the free agent section it says it doesn't matter what order you have your picks in because the highest bid on each player will win him. That's just the way I see it, I'm sure someone who for sure knows will clear it up.

That is correct. The highest dollar value will be accepted by the computer, so make sure the primary person you are selecting has the highest dollar value. Why you would put a higher dollar value on your third option is beyond me, but please make sure that the player you want first has the highest dollar value.

The reason I can think of that you might put in a higher value for subsequent pick is this. You might want to go after a guy that you did not include in your original bid or conditional picks, but ONLY on the condition that you got one of the guys in your original choices. This is because you might not want to drop anybody else on your roster until you for sure had him replaced. You might say why not just replace that guy to begin with, but if you have a dead guy on your roster or something you would definitely replace him first. Maybe there is a way to do what I am talking about another way, but I'm not seeing it because you can't increase the values on conditional picks.

If it's something that REALLY is wanted by owners, let me know and we'll discuss with STATS for the future. At this point, our system is set up to take the highest bid and it won't allow a conditional bid to be higher than the primary bid. Everyone will have to be aware of this going forward and we'll address this if there's a need to change it going forward.

What would really help me (and other owners) is a way to change the bid amounts on players listed in contingencies lists.

Okay, I appreciate the input. Like I said, we can discuss all of this with STATS going forward and at the very least have changes for football and/or the next baseball season. But right now this is the system we have and we'll continue to tweak it to make it the best we can without confusing people with drastic mid-season changes.

Hi guys. Greg- Great job with everything... Anyway, I think being able to increase value for a second choice makes sense. Let's say my top choice is player X, but I don't think so many will be after him, so I big $11. If I don't get him, I want player Y, who I think will be more popular. So I big $20 for him. Make sense, or am I missing something here?

At a minimum it would be nice to be able to modify your bids. It takes quite a bit of time to go through and make a bid and all the contingencies and then if you want to modify it you have to wipe it out and start over.

Good points. I'll forward these ideas to STATS and we'll see what we can do yet this year. I certainly want the FAAB process to be as easy as possible and it's something we'll use in football and going forward in the NFBC, so let's get it right. Keep the suggestions coming on how we can improve the technical process. Thanks.

Definitely agree on adding these two points:

1) Be able to edit a bid amount (this way a team can enter them early in the week and adjust if necessary at the end). Right now if you have a main bid with 5 conditional picks, and wanted to change the main bid, you have to delete the main pcik (which in turns deletes ALL conditionals). This becomes tedious.

2) Allow WHATEVER value you want for conditional picks. It makes too much sense. It makes it easy for people to set up their bids based on WHO THEY WANT TO CUT instead of the other way around. If you allow this, then you ONLY need one main bid for each player you may want to cut.
