How about a Higher stakes mixed league auction. 15 teams, at 5-10k per team, pay top 5 teams. 1st 50%, 2nd 20%, 3rd, 15%, 4th 10%, 5th, 5%. Any thoughts?

I've had the same thoughts about high-stakes fantasy baseball, science69. Considering the success that poker has had -- with literally *thousands* of people willing to pony up $10K for the WSOP -- you'd think there would also be some type of market for high-stakes fantasy baseball. Were the NFBC to run an event such as this, I'd envision something like the following:

16 teams, $5K entry fee

$50K first prize (nice round number, plus it'd attract a lot of attention)

$12.5K second prize

$7.5K third prize

That leaves $10K to whomever is running the event. Plus, you have to figure that the sponsorship & promotional opportunities for an event like this could be substantial. Call it something like "The World Series of Fantasy Baseball: The Ultimate Fantasy Baseball League." As the highest payout baseball league in history, I'm guessing it would be very attractive to promotional partners.

Anyway, you have to figure that something like this will show up eventually. When it does, I'll probably play.

If 15 guys post here and show that there is serious interest in a concept like this, I think you guys know and trust me well enough to realize that Krause Publications and STATS would put a first-rate league together. It's a natural progression that even more serious leagues are going to evolve beyond the NFBC, but the consumers must trust those in charge with doing this first-rate and first-class all the way. I'm not sure the market is ready for this jump just yet, but we'll find out from this thread.

My goal is still to expand this event to more areas of the country and involve as many people who are interested in competing for the National Fantasy Baseball Championship as possible. But if a more elite league eventually forms off this idea, I'm ready to help out in any way that I can. Thanks for the thread.

Hey Greg -- Why don't you move this thread to the main board and see what kind of response you get? If something like this is ready in 2005, count me in.

George Kleeman of Chicago also says he's in at 5K if there is enough interest. Let's see, that's two in Las Vegas, two in Chicago and one in New York. I never expected this type of response, but I'll keep an open mind until I hear otherwise. Thanks for the posts, guys.

Man, I didn't throw this out for baseball!!! I just chimed in and said that operationally we could run a league like this and I think everyone would trust KP and STATS to run a first-rate league and guarantee the prize money. I think if someone started a thread like this for football, I'd say the same thing. I'm not encouraging a 5k league, but if there's legitimate interest in this and we can find a way to get all of the participants together, I'd run it. And I'd make sure it's done right and the champion got his/her just due and publicity.

Stanley Kaye, an NFBC league champion in 2004, has made it known that he is interested as well. I'll add his name to this list and just watch to see how this all progresses.

The 5K league can be on Sunday the same weekend as the draft. If planned enough in advance the 12 to 15 people can plan to leave either late Sunday or Monday. Hope we have enough interest.

I KNEW you guys existed! Everyone on these boards telling me that nobody plays mixed-auction. HA! Look at the stakes that REAL fantasy players want to play at! I've been thinking of running something like this for years but always thought it would be too hard to find enough willing to go this high. If it were run through NFBC, though, I would feel confident it could be pulled off ;)

Problem for me is I'm sure there would only be one of these which means it would be in Vegas which means I can't play :(

why not via a conference call, all anyone needs is to be able to hear the players and bids and chime in when they wanted to. i'm sure greg could set that up for you or anyone else that couldn't be in vegas that day.

Terry Haney says he's interested in a 5K league. I haven't figured out the details for such a league, I'm just relaying the names as they come in or call me. If we really were to put a league like this together, it would be best if everyone were assembled together, but anything is possible. We'll see about logistics, dates, setup and more if the interest keeps coming in.

Terry is also interested in a league that does daily transactions. He's not necessarily saying it needs to be this one, but he's looking for people who are interested in forming a mixed league with daily transactions. Anyone interested in that as well?

I've never done an auction before, but if this 5K Mixed League Auction becomes official, it will be too tempting for me to pass up! (Provided the vig is no more than $10K.)

There are actually two threads about a higher-stakes league, one asking for a 5K entry fee Mixed Auction League and another asking for a 5K entry fee Mixed Draft. The draft obviously would be easier to do and easier to combine people from all three cities if we had to. The auction almost would have to be with all of the participants in one spot.

Give that some thought to those of you seeking to form one of these higher-stakes leagues. I honestly think getting a 5K NFBC-draft would be the easier of the two options to coordinate. Right now there seems to be at least 6-7 participants who want to compete in a 5K event of some kind. Keep the talk going and I'll try to coordinate something if the interest is there.

As I have stated before I will play in mix DRAFT league with 5 K entry fee. I will only do it if we can have it the same weekend as the regular draft. The only other thing that would work is a draft room on the computer. It would not be as much fun but it would work. Greg I hope you can put this together.

We are still 4 months away. I dont think there will be any problem filling a 5K mixed league auction in each city.

On the flip side, a 5k snake draft doesnt have the same appeal to me, as we all will be snake drafting in the main event. Most fantasy leagues are mixed and done by auction, there should be no alternative for the high-stakes league.

Actually, I love the idea of a $5 K mixed draft league. I'd feel much more comfortable with a snake draft as I don't have a ton of experience doing auctions.

Also, staying in Chicago would be great (which could be done with a mixed draft).

I am in for a 5K mixed league, IF

1) it was auction

2) it was NOT daily transactions

It would be more fun if it was on the NFBC weekend, but could easily be done later online if we need to do that to have the league full.

I think the mixed AUCTION was as important as the 5K on this thread. Gotta be an AUCTION. You all got your DRAFT as the Saturday main event already.

If there's anyway to make it via conference call or whatever I'M ALL IN!!!

I might even be able to get 1 or 2 more if I can get them to step up and grow a pair.
