Daily Transactions

Post by redsoxfn » Sun Dec 19, 2004 4:05 am

Hi Greg. Happened to see this link off of Baseball HQ and enjoyed getting familiar with the site. Have been in a AL only league for 12 years and am considering entry into one of the AL auctions. I really like what I see however after reading the rules I had two concerns.

1) No trading. Although it's a concern I can see no way around potential collusion. So I can get over that limitation.

2) Weekly transactions as opposed to daily transactions. This is the reason I have not already signed up. Weekly transactions removes so much of the strategy involved and to me is even more important in a league where there is no trading. Our league left the stats company we used 7 years ago because they could not offer daily tansactions.

I'm not sure if others feel the same.

RedSoxfn: You will learn to appreciate the weekly transactions vs. the daily transactions. I've been doing daily transaction leagues for about 10 years now and I first started with the weekly transaction leagues 2 years ago. Believe me, the weekly transaction is the way to go. And there are definitely strategies that go with the weekly transaction vs. the daily: which SPs will start twice, how many SPs should I use vs. relievers, etc.

For me the weekly transaction is more enjoyable than the daily. :D

I agree with you Redsox fan but the majority of players in this event don't want to put the time and effort into daily transactions. Too many entrants have lives outside of fantasy sports  . Afraid you'll never see that in the NFBC, it would reduce the player pool tremendously. Just not that many people who want to manage their teams same as managers in the major leagues do, so instead of spot starts, lefty vs. righty, weather gambles, and sit Larry Walker vs. Randy Johnson, we get two start weeks and 4 or 5 days of no stats for injured players. :(

But in spite of all that, because of the grandeur and scope of this event, the top notch competition, and the professional way this event is run, you will not find a more exciting or fun event in all of fantasy sports. We all have our preferences in how we like to play the game but Greg and Krause publications have tailored an event that everyone can play and to be a true National Championship you need to cover the broadest spectrum of players and this setup does that. It's easier for daily players to adapt to weekly than it would be the other way around.

So go ahead and take the plunge, you won't regret it. And this is coming from a big proponent of daily transactions. The NFBC ain't perfect but it's by far the best game in town :D

RedSoxFan, I apologize for the delayed response, but I was at Lambeau Field yesterday and 1) It took me two full days to thaw out; and 2) That game left me with a hangover in more ways than you can imagine. Man, how frustrating.

We actually had a good discussion last year about daily transactions and weekly transactions. No question there is an audience within the NFBC that would play a daily transaction game and we certainly could run that through STATS. However, the vast majority of our participants feel that would be too much for them and wouldn't enter the NFBC. We've actually talked about having transactions on Sunday night and Thursday night and maybe in future years a twice-a-week transaction period may come to fruition. I wouldn't be against that down the road if the members wanted it, so we'll keep that discussion out there.

But for now, the weekly transaction deadline makes the most sense for everyone. In one year, we have built a great event and I honestly believe we will sell out all 300 spots this year for the NFBC and we'll definitely have more auctions than we had last year (3). We may even be able to add a $5,000 entry fee league. Who knows, by next year maybe there will be enough interest to create a satellite NFBC league where we run daily transactions just for that online contest. The future is so promising, I wouldn't count anything out right now.

I think weekly transactions are fine, however I think a couple of changes would make the competition even better, and to some extent more fair.

I believe if you have a player who is activated off the Dl midweek or a player who is placed on the Dl during the week you should be allowed to make line up changes in these instances if your reserve roster allows it. In my opinion these simple would changes would allow each team to put its best team on the field each week. Just a thought, but i would welcome your feedback.

Yes, that is why people were pushing for two transaction deadlines as the Thursday night/Friday morning deadline would cure the problem you just described. If a guy went on the DL on Tuesday morning (which seems to happen a lot), at least that owner would have a chance to get some stats out of that position with a second transaction deadline.

We won't be enacting that in 2005, but I encourage further discussion on this and I think there's a way to make this work in the future. I don't want guys changing their starting rotations mid-week, so I think I'd have to have some stipulations on this. But we'll keep talking about it and make it fair for everyone if we ever go this way.

I certainly don't feel like I don't have the time to put into a daily transaction league--I'll be hanging on every move my team makes--but weekly transactions work far better.

In daily transaction leagues, you have to keep on putting in and taking out pitchers to maximize your starts. This means you have to effectively draft 5 good pitchers to put on your bench and put them in and out as their starts come up. Otherwise you won't be able to compete in wins and strikeouts. Furthermore, the whole idea of having a bench becomes a canard because all you can put on it is pitchers that you have to put in and out every day. Why not just get rid of the bench and have 14 pitching slots, in which case you can't make daily transactions anyway?

The only solution is to have a maximum limit to the # of innings for pitchers, which completely nullifies the efforts of starters like Tim Hudson or Roy Halladay who are partly valued because they pitch so many innings over the course of the season. I played in a league with a limit last year and my pitching was so effecient that I was punished for it. I had to keep on skipping Ollie Perez and others in the rotation at the end of the season because my starters were working too deep into games and I was racking up too many innings. What a nightmare! I'll stick with weekly transactions, thank you very much.
