Laptops at the Draft

I know this is somewhat old news, but since the following was posted in another thread I thought I'd say something:

It says right in the rules that you can't do that. Tom will be heading up New York, so have no fear GG, he will control that this year! [Big Grin]

Take this for what it's worth since I won't be able to attend the Main Event this year (moving to satellites due to conflict with March 17th date), but I think this is a ridiculous rule. If an owner wants to bring his own extension cord and/or power strip, and especially if he's willing to share it with others, why wouldn't this be allowed? We all spend an unbelievable amount of time and money on different tools preparing for this big-money event (sophisticated spreadsheets, website subscriptions, publications, RotoLab software), and then to deny the use of that particular technology on Draft Day is just (enter descriptive word of choice here...).
I'm sure this has been covered in the past, but I'd love to hear the official rationale. Is the thinking that laptop people would have an unfair advantage over non-laptop people and that this somehow levels the playing field?

This is probably one of the most covered issues over the history of the NFBC. I'm sure you will be pointed to the threads or Tom/Greg will summerize but a couple of quick things to think about. Having a PC with you is fine but the issue is outlet availability.
1. Not all draft tables are set up near outlets and if they are there is no guarantee that you will be near one.
2. In fact there is no guarantee that any outlets will be available where you draft.
3. Fire/safety requirements often times prevent lots of extension cords winding throughout areas where people walk.
Greg/Tom cannot guarantee equal access for all so they essentially determined that no one should have extension cord usage. The playing field is leveled that way. Bring an extra battery pack.

Invest in a second battery, it is what I did. I've also watched while some did hook up and nothing was said. Comes DOWN to each league and the members within. If you GET one guy whining about being hooked up - you'll be made to unplug. Nothing wrong with charging during the breaks, but with multiple day drafts or long Auctions the extra battery becomes a must. If you are spending that much on participating then spring for the extra juice.

If you are spending that much on participating then spring for the extra juice. I had a 6 hour battery with me last year, which was fine for the Main Event. But the day before, the NL Auction League took 7 hours because it was half Tampa/half Chicago, and I ran out of juice right before the end game started, which is when I needed my RotoLab data the most. I had paper backup but it was really a disaster.
And that's why I ended up in dead last in that league. It's my story, and I'm sticking to it...

Is the thinking that laptop people would have an unfair advantage over non-laptop people and that this somehow levels the playing field? The thinking is that we can't guarantee access to everyone in every city. I'm not sure we're even ordering electricity hookups at the Javits Center because it's thousands of dollars in union fees for that. And in a 20,000 square foot space like we have in New York and Las Vegas, we can't guarantee the leagues in the middle of the room could even get electricity there.
There's also the concern that power could get cut off for a league or a facilitator could accidentally unplug everyone and all kinds of other possibilities that would make us responsible for what happened. The safest thing to do each year since we move to different facilities and continue to expand in the number of participants is to put the onus back on you owners who want to use a laptop. Just get a strong battery or a second one and juice up during the breaks. That's the safest way to do this.

BEF: I understand where you are coming from. On Friday I take part in an early Auction that starts at 8am - 9am. Second draft kicks off at 4pm. I'm quite busy trying to make sure I have enough juice to last the day. I also use Rotolab which serves a more important purpose LATER in any Auction.
The Main Event is pretty easy to survive on limited power.
I just hope in future years GREG doesn't come under intense pressure from Congress in regards to our ROTO records. It is obvious that some of us in the NFBC have been "JUICING" since the inception. If I test positive, I'm going to tell everybody I took my extra battery from Shawn Childs table.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
