Had my final practice draft in anticipation of my very first ever NFBC satellite. Drafyed out of the 2 hole which is where I'll be drafting tonight. Please let me know where I reached, what I did right (if anything) and how this team would compete. I know my closers are weak but couldn't get in on the run. Thanks!

It looks like you did a very nice job of building a solid and balanced offense.

Your pitching would appear to be a complete hit or miss proposition across the board. Some of your pitchers are considered on the rise, but a very legit argument could be made against wanting anything to do with every arm on that staff.

Yea, I agree with the arms. Although I'm not that dead set against them but I could be biased as I picked them. The hardest thing for me in the #2 slot is what to do with the third round. Would you continue to draft bats or pick up an arm, realizing that by the time it gets back to you in the 4th round, the top arms will be gone? I'm a guy that hates to draft anything but bats usually in the first 4-5 rounds but do I need to readjust that with a 15 team league?

That depends.....which one are you in? I'm in the $100 WTA draft. As a newbie, I don't trust myself with a big money draft just yet. If I prove to myself that I can do this amongst some of the best players around, I'll probably go to one of the big dances next year. But this year is a learning year for me.

However, how about some help on strategy with the 3rd round pick? That has to be the hardest spot for me in the entire draft. I usually see either Aramis or the Rockies 3B sitting there and they look too good to pass up. Of course, I didn't draft exactly like I will tonight (why give away all secrets?) but it is that 3rd round that torments a newbie like myself.

You might not want to consider Morneau a no-brainer with your 2nd or 3rd... he's only had the one big year.

You get better track records there from:

--Aramis Ramirez

--Paul Konerko

--Derrek Lee

--Michael Young

If SPs other than Santana go earlier than expected, maybe one of these falls to you:

--Jason Bay

--Manny Ramirez

--Miguel Tejada

If you're picking at 2.14 and Santana is the only SP off the board, you might want to select your favorite choice from:

--Chris Carpenter

--Roy Oswalt

--Carlos Zambrano

--Roy Halladay

--Jake Peavy

If any of those SPs are special to you, they're worth grabbing... all of those guys will be gone by 4.14 so it's your last shot to grab an ace.

Thanks Rodger. In a 10 team league, the picking is easier, no doubt. I like your strategy. I hate picking an arm in the third round (too much experience in a 10 team league I guess) but I hate the thought more of not having at least one sure-fire arm on the staff, if there is such a thing as a sure-fire arm.

3rd round is tough but remember that Pitchers can disappoint and make or break your season...

It's all about how much you like to gamble. For instance, you say "As a newbie, I don't trust myself with a big money draft just yet. If I prove to myself that I can do this amongst some of the best players around, I'll probably go to one of the big dances next year." Doesn't that answer your question, you like to play it safe...

Nothing compares to the Main and it's a huge mistake to compare a $100 satellite with it. There's only a few spots left so you need to make your move now and get in on the real competition... :D

[/QUOTE]I love Atkins this season; age, ballpark, lineup, all leads me to believe he can improve on last years numbers. I've actually been contemplating taking him in the 2nd round, pick 24 overall.
