T or F: A minor league pitcher should be available as a Free Agent if they are not on anyones team and have pitched in the majors this season.

A player I'm considering picking up is not available and they fit this criteria. Double bonus to you gurus who can name this pitcher.

The criteria for being available in your league's free agent pool is to currently be on a major league roster or that player was drafted by a team in your league on Draft Day and later dropped. Then even if he was in the minors, he'd be available in your league's FAAB. Just because he once pitched in the majors doesn't make him eligible to be picked up in your league.

Once he's added to an MLB roster, he will be placed in your league's free agent pool and everyone in your league will have the same chance to bid for his services.

Just to clarify myself on this rule, what is the case if:

Player A was not drafted in the main event draft.

Week 3 gets a start at the major league level and IS signed by a team in my league.

Week 5 player is demoted to minors and the team that signed him week 3 now waives him.

Is he still a free agent at any point the rest of the season?

So if I follow this, the player in question, (lets call him pitcher KG)BECAME eligible when he was first called up, but LOST his eligibilty when no one acquired him and he was sent back down....

am I barking up the right tree?
Well, you could have first selected him on Draft Day. If he wasn't selected then and started the season in the minors, yes then his next opportunity to be picked up would have been when he was called up. If he pitched in the majors an then went back down to the minors without anyone picking him up then, yes he'd still be unavailable until he got called up to the majors again. Hope this helps.
I'm just trying to understand the reasoning behind this.

I know we've had this discussion about a minor leaguer who was never drafted but comes up for the first time. The intent is to give everyone a fair shot at him (although everyone had a fair shot at him in the draft and passed)

Now we have a player(s)and everyone had TWO opportunities to claim him and didn't. Again, being the apparent minority I'll accept the rules as stated, but if a team wants to mirror the parent club and use him for a possible 2-start week, why deny this because no one wanted to take a chance on him the first 3 months of the season, especially since he had been called up and has been part of the major league roster?

Just my 2 cents.

I say the Mariners woodshed this guy and he doesn't even get his second start.

This thread is another instance (although the rule is clearly spelled out in "The Official Rules) of why the FAAB Pool eligibility procedure needs freshening for continuities sake.

The following is from my posting of June 01, 2007 12:20 PM

________________________________________

DRAFT and FAAB Pool Eligibility for 2008

“When” players are/become available for “Rostering” is IMO another area where the rules need tweaking.

(1) The NFBC has a peculiar situation relating to accumulation of stats due to the fact there are concurrent competitions. A team competes against fourteen teams in their “League” while simultaneously being ranked in the “Overall” with 374 other teams. For a truly, level, playing field all teams should have access to the same players at the same time.

What I suggest…

(A) The present pool eligibility for “The Draft” is fine. Every player, @ any level can be acquired within the bounds of your roster.(I’m sure that some day soon SOMEONE! is going take a Hitoke Iwase)

(B) After the Draft, every player drafted, by any NFBC team as well as those on an “Opening Day” 25 man roster will be AND remain eligible for pickup(If available of course!) in every League for the entire season—subject to rulings by the Commissioner.

For instance, if Tim Lincecum, was Drafted in at least one League, he would be in the FAAB Pool from day one and stay there in every League of the NFBC even if he wasn’t Drafted in that league.

OR…

If a Free Agent, (ie.Roger Clemens) wasn’t taken in any League, the Commissioner would rule him in or out of the Pool at the onset of the season, before the first FAAB session.

(C) All other players (Those not in the NFBC FA Pool to start the season) will be added to the FAAB pool as they are called up and remain in the pool for the rest of the current season even if sent down at some point.

Let's "Gett'er Done!!" :D

Kevin
