Strange Rule/Call - Game One

Not that it impacted the outcome of the game, but I found the obstruction call in Game One somewhat strange. Does the rule really make no provision for going so far out of the base path? A few more feet and Inge would have been in the dugout. Heck the third base coach was closer to the base path than Inge. Why not just run out of the basepath all of the time and just find a fielder to run into?

Also, why is this obstruction never called on catchers when they block the plate without the ball? Are catchers exempt?
