Daily lineup changes

Post by BigHurt » Tue Apr 03, 2007 8:34 am

I understand the reasoning for only allowing free agent pickups on a weekly basis, but was wondering if there was ever serious thought given to allowing daily lineup changes within the 30 man rosters?

I have no beef with the weekly system, just interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this.

I have no beef with the weekly system, just interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this. Hurt, there have been lengthy discussions in the past on this topic. What it boiled down to was that most did not care to turn the league into a full time job. People at work or without internet access during the day would be at a disadvantage to the teams that are hooked in 24/7. It would also turn into one big starting pitcher streaming match. Team depth, strategy, balance would all be thrown out the window for who could amass the most starters and flip them every day.

BigHurt posted this topic as I was receiving Gregs response to this very observation/question from me. I am new to the NFBC and did not play this year but after looking through all of the rules, this one struck me as odd.

I understand what you are saying but this is the ELITE baseball game being played by the best of the best.

It seems to me that you should be able to maximize your matchups at this level of play and with this level of financial investment. You should be able to sit a player who is off and start someone in their place each day if you have the resources and you feel the matchup is in your best interest. Setting lineups for a whole week seems archaic to me but I am stuck in a football mode and that is not quite the marathon that baseball is.

I would have thought that a majority of owners would like this flexibility and technically I would think that it would take little or no work on stats part to make it happen.

Once a week changes is more challenging. Do you want this to be the ultimate challenge, or the ultimate busy-work?

this is not a fulltime thing for most of us, sounds like you need to get into a high stakes ultra league.

I understand the time committment by the players necessary to do this but you would not be forced to change your lineups. You could set them at the beginning of the week after you make your roster moves and be done with it. No harm no foul.

I also understand the risk involved with chasing numbers and playing matchups but why not have the option to do so?

Do you believe there is a competitive advantage to doing this?

--If so, then implementing it is a valid argument because you should give the players all of the possible tools to compete at this level.

--If not, let the fools like me who like to control everything and meddle with their lineups do just that.

I do not buy the fact that this is a hobby at this level and that it would be too much work to do this on a daily basis. You folks know you watch everyday and check your stats. You can just as easily make a change or two if you want to. This would not complicate or burdon the owners.

I also do not think that setting your lineups once a week is more challenging. I think it requires more skill to try and calculate who might or might not have a favorable matchup each and every day.

Once a week you maybe get to choose between the lessor of two evils for a certain position or two but why let any player sit on the bench if you can start them for someone with an off day (if the matchup is favorable)? It just seems as though you are actually managing more with daily moves and that to me appears to be more challenging than once a week.

Disclaimer: I am not an NFBC participant other than one satellite but will be playing next year and am just trying to get a feel for the game. I am also a control freak who likes to manage every detail so my opinion is likely skewed....

Deciding whether to pitch Livan Hernandez for 2 with one in Colorado versus Jon Garland for 1 at home. That kind of strategy gets flushed down the toilet with daily changes. I'm very unlikely to switch hitters day by day because my starters are better, especially since this is a very deep league. Maybe its because of the make-up of my team but your points are so absolutly dead wrong that I had to reply back.

Just my 2C. [/QUOTE]I'm as diehard as they come. But even I would blanch at joining a league where I KNOW I would be disadvantaged not skill-wise but TIME-wise. Peaking at the standings daily is a far cry from processing every bit of baseball info that day and maximizing your lineup based on that new info. Then scanning the starting lineups 15 minutes before the 1st game EVERY DAY to try to catch a rested regular to swap out.

No, we really dont have the total control over our rosters like they do in the bigs. Some strive for that realism but many others realize there needs to be some balance. It's the price some of the micromanagers must pay to ensure maximum involvement of this contest.

Maybe have 1 or 2 Satellite leagues for Daily lineup changes.

Main event is doing great with the rules we have.

I would not be interested in a daily change league. I was in a local one last year and it just turns into a league where each team has a bench full of starting pitchers and they get rotated in on days when they start. IMHO, that's not really challenging, and too unrealistic.

If you want to make daily line-up changes at $5 a move , I'm all in. But if not, Then I don't see why its worth it. You will have guys picking up pitchers every day, looking for the best match-ups, iF you have to spend $5 a move That would Juice the Pot, Big Time. If not , whats the point..? Line-ups every Day or every Week, as long as were all playing by the same rule , there is no advantage. If you can't beat someone setting your roster weekly, you won't get an advantage by doing it daily. IMHO

Upon further review and reflection,

1) I keep forgetting that this is supposed to be fun.

2) This actually why I decided to quit baseball around 2000. Because it was too time consuming. This is especially true as warm weather hits around here and there are numerous other things worthy of that daily time.

3) It is actually why I chose to play in a satellite this year instead of the main event as I wanted to see if I would carry this level of involvement beyond June when the football season starts to get in gear. Time will tell but if I had to prep daily for baseball, my football prep would suffer as there are only so many hours each week to focus on this stuff.

Whether or not a change like this is more challenging to the game has no bearing on the decision to play in this manner. The balance between fun and competition is just right and now I see the light.

I hereby rescind my previous posts on this topic.
