I look at the Florida Marlins, and I say to myself...they get it. Billy Beane gets duly deserved credit for running a winning franchise on a small budget. Bu the Marlins do the same and have won 2 World Series, continually put out a winning product while trading away their stars.
I look at that team and marvel about their shrewdness. Their SP for next year will be amongst the best in the NL:
JJohnson
Sanchez
Nolasco
Volstad
A Miller
Their bullpen will be best in NL with back end of Gregg, Lindstrom and Nunez and they have dumped slightly overpriced guys who are superfluous to their success for cheaper talent: Jacobs, WIllingham, Olsen.
Meanwhile they have exciting prospects Maybin, Gorky whatever and a couple of top pitching guys Tucker, Vander SLoot (oops thats the guy who killed Natalie Halloway)
I pick Marlins to win NL East in 09

Baker/Treanor/Rabelo at catcher. Baker is the starter and played well in less than 200 AB but will he even be a top 15 catcher next year?
Cantu at first. Good resurgent year. Will the real Cantu please stand up?
Uggla or Bonifacio at second. Uggla is hot and cold and Bonifacio is trying to learn how to steal first.
Hanley Rameriez at SS. None better. Snappy dresser too.
Dallas McPherson at 3B. AAAA player of the year. Or will the Marlins dip into that deep pool of FA 3B like...um...let's see...um!
Cameron Maybin. Exciting player but young.
Jeremy Hermida. Cannot get any more middle of the pack as far as OF go.
Third OF du jour. Who knows?
Yes, the Marlins continue to surprise many years, but this year? And win the NL East? You will get GREAT odds in Vegas.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I do not necessarily argue that these are all fantasy studs. Just that for a very diminutive payroll, they have a very competitve team.
Maybin
Uggla
Hanley
Cantu
McPherson
Hermida
Ross
Catcher de Jour
is a nice lineup for the NL. Hey, Im not a fan of the Marlins, just have to respect their maneuverings, given their monetary restrictions.

For real baseball, I like to take the best hitter out of a lineup, like he's dl'ed, and see how it stacks up. If Hanley is taken out and Amezaga put in, you'd have to agree that it would be a very beatable lineup.
I do get your point. The Marlins have, by far, the lowest payroll in baseball and yet remain quite competitive. I wouldn't pick them to win a division next year, but damned few picked the Rays this year too.
