closers

with all the uncertainty at the closer position going in to 2009, isn't this a good year to go in to the serpentine drafts with the plan of drafting a "stud" closer early, say by round 6 or 7, with the idea of grabbing a couple setup guys late, rounds 28 - 30, or even using FAAB money to fill the need as the year goes?

closers

It could be.

But usually by draft time the murky closing picture has cleared up and most teams have declared what their plan is going into the year. Some of the lesser teams will not declare or say they're closing by committee.

Last year Piniella waited till after the draft to name Wood as the closer, mostly to see if Wood could make it through spring training without getting injured.

This year Tampa Bay may do the same thing with Percival.

By draft time Fuentes, Hoffman, and Saito will all be signed and may be closers. Heck, Isringhausen, Gagne, and Guardado could be signed and used the same way on lesser teams.

We'll know a lot more by March.
