I don't expect that to happen, but it's possible.

Funny when Cueto gets mentioned, everybody thinks automatic stud, but mention Volquez and nobody can stop talking about the park he pitches in. There are guys who pitch well in hitter's parks, and it's only half the games. Case in point, Harang has pitched better at home 3 out of the last 4 years. I think park effects are overrated. If the guy is spotting his fastball and demonstrating his top notch stuff, he'll be fine wherever he pitches.

well- there are many apples to oranges comparisons on these boards- that may be the first apples to oranges to grapes. harang has been good in a hitters park. check. cueto hasn't pitched in the majors yet- but in the minors- very good. check. volquez pitched in a hitters park- check. but his record there in 3 years was 3-11 with a 7.22 era. he also got pounded a little in A ball last year. lets just say he has talent ( i guess) and is improving, and leave it at that- but if you want the consistency of harang in a hitters park- well you can have the 3-11 7.22 era in a hitters park that volquez sports

But the past doesn't always equal the future. He throws 98 mph, he's young and is up-and-coming. To define him as a 7.22 e.r.a. pitcher would be unfair and inaccurate. This guy has a chance to be a very good pitcher, whether it's this year or next I don't know.
But you put up a whale of an argument. If he goes out an has a solid season, your argument and perspective gets thrown out the door IMO.

5-1 record with 1.06 e.r.a. and 1.20 whip. Leads the major leagues in strikeouts by 9.
For all intensive purposes he's pitched as well or better at home with a 3-0 record and 1.20 e.r.a.
Is there going to be anymore talk about what ballpark he pitches in or that he's a flyball pticher.
I said it before. All the hype regarding Cueto and Volquez slips right under the radar (with a 98mph fastball)
Seems like the NFBC fell in love with Mad Max and Cueto so far while Volquez has been the real deal. I think something to learn from this is that it pays to have major league experience. Volquez had 16 starts covering 3 years previous, doesn't seem like much, but it gives him an edge over guys like Cueto and Max who are facing major league hitters for the first time. Volquez is 24 years old, and pitching lights out. He should be a a nice 3.50-3.70 e.r.a. - 1.35 whip - 190 K pitcher this year.
On a side note: I'd take Liriano and his Tommy John 18 month old surgery over Mad Max any day of the week. It might be a month before Liriano gets brought back up, but based on scenario, circumstances and likelihood, how can anyone expect Scherzer to give more wins, strikeouts, better e.r.a. and whip than Liriano this year? I don't see it based on odds.
Difference between Max and Liriano is that Max could very well get sent down at some point or sent to the bullpen where as Liriano inevitably will be called up. It's a no-brainer. Meanwhile, $600-$900 is being spent on Mad Max and Liriano has been dropped in a couple leagues.

I had to chuckle with the hype that Cueto was getting since mid march in the NFBC. In the meantime, Wyle e coyote super genius's forgot about The Toad. Nary a mention, just snickers when his name came up.
Last I heard, Johnny Vandemeer Cueto has been taking his owners down a very predictible path.....mid pack. In the meantime, I'll collect my bums like Colon and go at it. You guys should know that Colon was good once....once and could be again if his arm stays right. A big if, but a if for all pitchers. I took the Fat Toad before Cueto, because last I heard Colon had actully won a Cy young in the league before. At least Cueto got you two career wins, and a few k's before he gets sent down. Don't even get me started about Clement and Scheaeerrrzer. That's alot of money for nothing, chicks for free me thinks.
A serious question for you guys....Do you feel that the more you know the more it hurts you? I mean, we all love the game and employ different strategies, but I really think you guys know TOO much and try to out smart yourselves. I know that when I do that or have tried it in the past, it comes back to bite me.
BTW, for those who don't know me, my posts are in good fun and feel free to beat me like a pulp. I have thick skin. FUDD There are ways to overthink things here true, but throwing big $ at a player that has the potential to really fill a need (scherz / clement) or draft a player in the 20th (cueto) instead of a colon is a no brainer. You take a shot at the upside. If it doesnt work out you move on. Realized upside is what wins here.

True Cuteo has tremendous upside, but Colon hasn't seen the field yet and Cueto owners are going through a rough patch. Colon has 1 start and 1 win. Cueto has about 10 starts with 2 wins and a bunch of K's which are very nice. His ERA is a mess and his whip has climbed every week since week 1.
I think it's just a matter of preference on how you measure upside.. I prefer dirty stinken broken down bums with a smatter of youth.
Perferably, fat ones with Cy youngs under their belt who throw in the mid 90's on a World Championship team vs. a rookie who might win the cy young in 5 years pitching in a banjo box on a horrible defensive team.
Volquez has been an exception to the rule this year and those are the kind of picks that can win you championships, much like Colon. Forgive me if I love the washed up guys that give numbers instead of the unknown overhyped rookies. The strategy might not win me the 100k that you guys are in the hunt for, all I know is that is is a rarity when I finish out of the money in any league over 20 years using this method. I guess my training has been to cash a paycheck every year vs. winning the kings ransom that you guys play for. It really is quite incredible what you guys do and I applaud it. That's what makes these leagues so much fun for everyone, different viewpoints and different ways to win.
FUDD Oh there's alot under that belt. 1 Cy and 300lbs. I didn't draft Cueto. Bad example. I did draft Volquez instead of Colon though. Bad D. Bandbox. 7 wins, 1.33 era. Now THERE's my upside
