I don't think they have enough starting pitching to go without Sheets. Other than Gallardo, I don't see much there I like and there isn't much in the minors currently. So if Sheets does get hurt, that's going to be a problem.
But I agree they need to be smart with Sheets and not sign him based on one good or great season should that be the case in 2008. His injury history absolutely has to be factored strongly into the decision whether to keep him long term or not. Excellent insight.
Now that I look closely at their pitching staff I gotta agree with you. Gallardo will be a true #1, even if Capuano rebounds, they don't have much else. Lots of 5+ e.r.a/high whip guys in late 20's/early 30's. I thought Bush was headed in the right direction until he fell off last year. And Gagne is certainly no guarantee. Maybe Manny Parra could be a nice #3. Pitching still has holes.
You gotta love that offense though.

I think their bullpen will be fine too. Mike Maddux is arguably the best pitching coach in the game. He has done some outstanding things with the Brewers' pen over the years.

sorry tom- i was talking about 2009. i really like gualardo and parra- for 2009. then pick up a decent starter to go with what they have. they are sort of "pot committed" on the hitting side. only a few teams have the dough to have great pitching and great hitting. again- 2 good pitchers and that hitting should be enough in nl central. i will be rooting for them.
