Jason was a friend of mine from 1993 to the pending divorce (they fought bitterly over me and Karen was unlucky enough to get me). The last signals I got were(this was right before Christmas) that they really honestly had no idea if they (The Redsox) wanted him back.
The last time I saw him was in Baltimore in May- he mentioned a few more seasons. I know that he really wants to be in the organization long term.

Miguel Montero has been linked to trade talks between Diamondbacks and Red Sox recently.
The NEED another catcher as Bard cannot hold up every day (and one of the reasons he left Boston before was because he was terrible catching Wake and the knuckle balls....I should say chasing instead of catching) and it does not seem that the Sawks have much interest re-signing Varitek (especially at the figure he likely has in mind)

He will be back. 1 yr and much less than he would of gotten in arbitration.

Reports suggest Red Sox owner John Henry is getting together with Varitek.

It's hard to see a team coughing up a first round compensation pick to sign an aging catcher whose hitting has dropped off significantly. Jason and his agent (who else?) seriously misread the market when they declined the Red Sox' arbitration offer.
