What Will Stock Market Be On Draft Day?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri Feb 20, 2009 5:43 am

I hope you guys know you are cluttering up my fine Fantasy/MLB Talk Forum with all of this depressing economic news. :D There is a Forum for non-baseball talk, you know?

Oh well, hammer away at the economy here if you'd like as it seems like a good release for all of us. I've lost so much in the stock market that it makes me sick, but what can you do? Each day gets worse and worse, yet I think we all hope that somehow things will turn around. I never would have imagined a recession this deep, but when you see all of the blunders that have been made and the crooks who have led the blunders it's easier to see how this house of cards has crumbled.

Anyway, let's at least have one fun post here. The stock market is nearing 7300 right now as it's down triple figures again today. Here's the question of the day: What will the stock market be on Saturday, March 21st Draft Day? You get one guess and only one guess for a prize and the earlier you pick a number the more weighted it is towards the prize. I'm interested to see what some folks think the number will be.

The bonus is what you think the stock market will be at by year's end. KJ, any projections??

I say the stock market will be at 7135 on Draft Day.

At the end of the year, I'm guessing the Market will be 8300 or so... things have to get better eventually right????

An ominous sign of the times, on draft day the market will hit 6,666.66. Not even Scott Boras can spin a positive outlook for the market at this point.

More big names will go under, even some heavy hitters in retail. Hopefully Citi and Bank of America don't get nationalized but it doesn't look good.

Year end will be 6500 but in the name of some Boras optimism, on it's way back up.

Thanks guys,

Kevin A government takeover is becoming increasingly likely as the amount of bailout money needed to stabilize the banks is more than the banks are currently worth. If they become nationalized, all common stock is wiped out. As a man who foolishly gambled on C and BAC a month ago, I recommend you stay away.

Thanks guys,

I bought some today (not enough to go broke), as I have already owned some BAC :( . I kept thinking it would go back to 9 bucks so I could sell, as we all know, that will not happen. A couple of weeks ago the CEO bought tons and tons of it, so I figued it would rise, boooooyyyy was I wrong. Thanks for the input...I will take your advice and stay away.

If anyone has any stock advice...I am all ears. I didn't realize until today that you guys actualy talked about the stock market on a fantasy baseball-site. I don't know what I was thinking??

What do you guys think about the BIG 3 (Ford, Chysler, GM)? I know they are in the dumps and Ford is around $1.55. One of them has to eventually go up, dosen't it?...we have to drive cars?

March 21 probably 5,400 and 4,300 at year end why?

No Trust in the actual Market. Just today HUGE story reported by cnBS, Bernie Madoff (MADE-OFF) never traded a stock in 13 years as part of scheme. So why is this big news. Proves my opinion Stock Market is a huge ponzi scheme run by the crooks and policed by the crooks imho. If I recall didn't the SEC state a few weeks back that Madoff was auditted/investigated for 10 years and they could not find anything. HOW DID THEY MISS THIS? What did they AUDIT??? Its all a boys club from the FED to the Credit agencies to the SEC a big jerk circle. Think what you want just pure COMMON SENSE! S&P still lists GE Triple A, I bet you they cut their dividend soon. And Banks are in bad shape probably nationalization this weekend. Meredith Whitney was right one of the few Analysts that I will listen too.Sorry for rambling this story pissed me off!

Boy I trust the market totally right now.

P.S. Disclaimer all bets are off if the change the rules once again and ban short selling. More magic tricks no substance

Kevin, Ford is the only consideration and only if you're thinking long term. 2009 will be a very long year for all 3. I wouldn't touch GM or Chrysler at any cost. Bankruptcy seems inevitable. Should either fail, Ford seems to be the most likely to benefit.

2) Don't buy large cap stocks. If the only thing you're comfortable investing in are "household names", you shouldn't be trading stocks on your own.

3) Don't buy companies with liabilities that are so great and/or unknown that they can wipe out the common stockholders (which applies to every bank and auto company you've mentioned).

If you ever hear someone make an argument like this, close your ears and run away screaming. Yes, we will continue to drive cars, and that has absolutely nothing to what any company is potentially worth.

I think it will hit the lowest point in March. You think it is bad today in one month it will be very bad. Can't wait for the day that Uncle Sam comes and takes my Gold and Guns.

God Bless....opps can't say "God" they will be taking that away next!
