And That is why the Pirates are the Pirates

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sun Mar 29, 2009 7:24 am

A yearly ritual.

Every year around October the Pirates start shopping Jack Wilson. Seemingly surprised that no other team in baseball is interested in the shortstop, they make the announcement that Wilson is their starting shortstop for the upcoming season.

The Pirates have become a minor league team for larger payroll teams. Success in Pittsburgh leads to playing for larger market teams and not a building block for a championship.

Jason Kendall and Brian Giles in their prime and later Oliver Perez, Jason Bay, and Xavier Nady. The Pirates are the most lost franchise in baseball. No hope of a pennant. They are the anti-Steelers.

And now Roto World states that the Pirates are in preliminary talks to extend Jack Wilson's contract. Really? Possibly the least talented shortstop in the major leagues has found a home with a team that embraces mediocrity. We shouldn't be surprised. Just as we won't be surprised when we see that the Pirates are shopping Wilson again next fall.
