Great job, deserved finishes, enjoy your offseasons, and try not to spend all the money in one place! (Steve, Chad, that goes for you guys too!!! ;) )

Glenn Glenn - Just know that you had a great season and if it went to a Monday/Tuesday playoff, you had us by the balls with Lincecum. Great season!!!

Chasing the NFBC - A Fantasy Baseball Blog

Post by Glenneration X » Sun May 22, 2011 3:27 am

Last September, when my NFBC and WCOFB Main Event squads made their runs into and up the top 10 of their respective overalls, I started this blog. It served not only as a daily outlet for the excitement I was feeling, but also as a way to share & document my thoughts and efforts as I feverishly tried for my first overall title. It also served as something else to do each night as at the time my daily routine was relegated to working all day and helping with my 2-year old son & newborn twin baby girls at night. I obviously came up short in my overall title hopes, but it remains the most exciting time in my 20+ years of playing fantasy sports.

Recently, some of the successful and respected members of our fantasy community such as Rick Thomas, Mark Srebro, & Bob Particelli gave updates on their current standings in our contests as the baseball season reached and passed its quarter pole. It reminded me that as part of this blog last year, I gave a standing of not only my overall results but of all the leagues I was part of along with my thoughts of the various contests and formats. I decided to revisit this blog with what leagues I've entered this year, my current standings within them, and some updated thoughts of each. It'll be interesting for me to look back later in the year to see how my fortunes have either improved or suffered.

Last year, I had 14 teams, 12 of them FAAB. It was by far the most teams I'd ever had and took a great amount of time & effort. With my personal inability to ever give up on a team, the work never really subsided as the season went on, even with some teams hopelessly out of the running. Going into this year, I promised myself I would reduce the amount of leagues I would enter so I can dedicate more of my focus to each. Last year I had 14 teams, this year I was able to reduce the total to......16, all 16 FAAB. Damn, addiction's a bitch! Following is the various contests and formats I entered with a few thoughts & a quck update on how I'm doing in each.

NFBC Main Event

NYC - Lg - 5th, 92.5 pts, Overall - 128th, 2215 pts

AC - Lg - 4th, 96pts, Overall - 104th, 2297.5 pts

-Not much to say about the NFBC Main Event outside of to me, it is the premier & most prestigious contest in fantasy sports. I've won other leagues in other contests & other sports, but I'm most proud of my NFBC Main Event league title and overall finish last year...by far. Unfortunately, I don't think another run at the overall is in the cards with these teams. Some bad draft decisions, some critical injuries, & some terrible FAAB decisions have left these teams short of what I believe necessary to make that run. However, I am still in position for both leagues to make runs at money finishes & possible league titles and with much of the season left who knows, maybe I get a little luckier and a lot smarter, reverse these teams' descents down the overall standings, and make a later run in the overall afterall.

Ultimate

Lg - 4th, 96.5 pts

There's nothing like these premium leagues. Beat only 14 others, cash huge! Beat only 12 others, still cash huge! Last year I played my 1st Super, finished 4th and just missed out on the very last day of the season from finishing in the money. When even 3rd place pays multiple thousands of dollars, being competitive as the end of the season draws near carries an excitement hard to duplicate. This year I decided to upgrade to the Ultimate and thus far I've been competitive. I've been bouncing around near the top of the standings for most of the season, but the competition in this league is fierce & I'll have to be on top of my game to cash, let alone win. This team's definately got holes, but without an overall to worry about, it's not as critical to fix quickly or even at all.

Auction

Lg - 1st, 109.5 pts, Overall - 9th, 947 pts

- I was going to pass on the Auction Championships this year, I had a conflict with a poker tournament I had my eye on. Tom talked me out of it. Up until this week, I was happy he did. There's nothing like an auction draft, in any sport. The bidding on players is as fun & exciting as anything you can do in a fantasy draft. You have a chance at every single player. It's truly a blast. This team's been doing very well for me all season. It has some holes, but I've been able to address them as they've made themselves apparant. I was very happy with this team, until this week. Since Monday, this team's lost D. Wright, G. Sizemore, D. Lee, V. Padilla, & J. Johnson to the DL. In a week that's seen most of my teams ravaged by injury, this team's probably taken the worst hit. Hopefully none of the injuries prove to be long-term and I can tread water until the injured players come back.

Live DP

AC - Lg - 1st, 89.5 pts, Overall - 11th, 1666 pts

Online - Lg - 2nd, 79.5 pts, Overall - 28th, 1496 pts

- My original plan was to pass on the 12-teamers this year. I've had no success during the 1st two years of this contest and struggled even to be competitive. Eventually my addiction caused me to take two teams anyway. However going into the drafts, it was obvious what I had done previous seasons wasn't working. I knew I had to revise my strategies for this contest & implemented the new game plans during the drafts. So far so good, hopefully these teams can remain competitive through the year.

NFBC Private Satellites

Shawn Childs League - Lg - 4th, 91.5 pts

Hot Tub League - Lg - 3rd, 105.5 pts

-I'm not a big fan of joining satellites. They typically don't get my blood pumping enough. I also now know that there's always a chance for an "alias" in a satellite league, so I don't think my reluctance to enter these will change anytime soon. However, some satellites are different than others. The ones I am interested in joining are the more established, prestigious annual satellites always filled with some of the top players in our game. These provide tremendous early season prep and a way to challenge myself against the best. The SCL & Hot Tub both fit this description. Last year I finished 5th & 2nd in these respectively and was very proud of how I performed against these great players. This year so far, I'm competitive once again. Hopefully, I can remain in the hunt & possibly take one of these titles.

KJ Duke Leagues

MLBC-1 Salary League - Lg - 14th, 48.5 pts

NFBCK Keeper League - Lg - 14th, 48 pts

- These leagues are the bane of my fantasy existence!! The MLBC-1 draft was the most fun draft I've ever taken place in. Completely unique, the format's a blast. The others in the league were all great & fun guys who made the experience one I truly enjoyed. The season's been something else altogether. The format of the league is based on drafting players not only on ability but on their current major league salaries. In other words, the higher the player's real salary, the more you pay for the player.....in real dollars!!! I paid the 2nd most of anyone in the league and I'm currently 2nd from the bottom in the standings. A job well done. :(

The NFBCK Keeper League is exactly what it sounds like, you get to hold onto a certain number of players each year and even have a minor league system. I took over an existing team this year, one that wasn't really set up for a run this season. I'm not that disappointed of my current place in the standings, I'm more disappointed that as of now, I've done just as poorly in setting this team up for future years!!

I don't see either of these teams making a run for the money at this point, but I'm going to work hard to finish as high as possible (which looking at these teams, may be right where I am right now. :( )

WCOFB

Main Event Leagues - Lgs- 1st, 116 pts; 5th, 88 pts; 5th, 80 pts; Overall - 2nd, 1031.5 pts; 37th, 748.5 pts; 43rd, 712.5 pts

Online Championship - Lg - 2nd, 99.5 pts; Overall - 7th, 590.5 pts

- I rolled over football winnings & took three main event teams with the WCOFB and was also asked to join their Invitational to help kick off their Online Championships. Thus far, all my teams are competitive with one Main Event team even bouncing in and out of 1st in the overall. The WCOFB is a fun contest & format and has made significant improvements this year in their software and backend. They also have guaranteed their prize pool even though they didn't reach their registration goals, so the ROI is unbelievable for both their Main & Online championships. Those are the positives. Of course the negatives are there as well. As everyone probably knows, they've yet to finish paying out all their football winners and are currently going through an ownership transaction that leaves the direction and future of the contest in limbo. I'm hopeful they get their act together as I do enjoy their contests. Even more so, it sure would suck to go through all the time, effort, & investment and get lucky enough to win this thing only to wonder if the reward was there at the end. Time will tell.

Independent Leagues

CBS 15-Teamer - Lg - 7th, 88.5 pts

FFBC H2H Points League- Lg - 4-2 record

- Off a terrible start, I've been slowly moving up the standings in the CBS league. I hope to knock on the door of the leaders if I can keep rising, not only to finish in the money for this league, but also because I have a side bet with one of the other players in the league, of course the league leader.

The H2H league was put together on the FFPC message boards amongst some of the football stalwarts there, ends after a 16-week season & 3-week playoff, and has an FFPC main event entry as the prize. I've never played a H2H points league before, but find it a lot of fun. It's exciting to have the win or loss decided in only one week. You think a Sunday start for your ace is important in a season long rotisserie battle, imagine a close H2H week where that start can be the difference between a win or a loss. It's very similar to the fantasy football feel. I started 0-2 in that league, but have run off 4 straight and am ahead in this week's battle with only today to go. C'mon, need this win.

Looking at all my leagues, I'm a little surprised to see that I'm in the hunt for most of them. Outside of the KJ Duke leagues (sigh), I'm still in position to make a run at each league. Honestly, I feel I've done a poor job this year, specifically in FAAB & team management. I feel lucky to not be out of it in more leagues. Hopefully I can get my act together, start making better decisions, get a little lucky, and stay competitive enough to pull out a couple. Long season ahead. It'll be interesting for me to look back on this later on and see how it all plays out.

Every so often, I’ll peruse through the overall standings of the various games we play to see how some of the more familiar, successful, and frightening  names are doing. It’s interesting to see how the seasons are going for people I’ve met, interacted with, or just heard of.

If I glance at the overall standings today, I would not have to scroll down very far to see a very familiar name over and over again….Lindy Hinkelman. Currently second in the Main Event overall, Lindy’s proving his versatility by also leading the Auction overall and sitting in an embarrassing for him 8th overall in the Live DP. What????

If any other player were in the same position, I could blow it off with thoughts of it’s early, he’s been lucky so far, he’ll never be able to keep this up for a full season. However, this is the man who took a word that used to be synonymous with an early 20th century pilot or dance craze from the same era and turned it into something with an altogether different meaning for an entire fantasy sports community. For us, the Lindy means domination to the degree of winning two different overall fantasy baseball contests in the same season. What do we call it if Lindy wins all three?

Of course, it’s still early, he’s been lucky so far, and he’ll never be able to keep this up for a full season. :D

Even if he doesn’t, I think Lindy is proving to any doubters that remain out there how great a player he is. I’ve never met him, but can’t help but admire what he’s accomplished and what’s he’s doing thus far this season.

Move over Jupinka. Looks like there’s a new Satan in town.

A month ago, my NYC Main Event team was looking strong at or near the top of its league standings, settling nicely within the top 20 of the overall. I liked the makeup of the team and felt with a tweak here and a tweak there, I could compete for the league title and possibly even make a run at the overall.

Since that time, David Wright, Brian Roberts, Geovany Soto, Brandon McCarthy, Jonathan Broxton, & Brandon Lyon all ended up on the DL where they all still reside today and Travis Snider was demoted. With this team falling in both the league & overall standings daily and only Soto amongst the wounded with even a remotely definitive return date, the last thing this team could afford was another major injury.

Welcome Buster Posey.

Now this team has both catchers, both closers, half its infield, and other assorted missing parts on the shelf.

Below is not only a picture of a crash at home plate but also the crash of the once pretty lofty hopes for this team. What a difference a month can make.

....and so it continues. Homer Bailey gets pulled in the 4th with shoulder issues. Now he's being sent back to Cincinnati to have his shoulder examined by a specialist. I can't even field a full team anymore.

I know it's probably frustration talking, but right at this moment I feel like just putting a fork in this team.

With my NYC team resembling a M*A*S*H unit more than a fantasy baseball roster, my current Main Event hopes have shifted to my AC squad. Though both teams have very similar places in the standings, with each going into today with 90+ points, in 4th place in their respective leagues, and in the low 100's of the overall, I look at them with completely different perspectives.

As noted yesterday, my NYC team is littered with injuries & demotions, more than my reserve spots can handle, at positions extremely difficult to replace, and with no definitive date of return for the vast majority of the infirmed.

While my AC team has also suffered its share of wounded or demoted players, their stays on the DL or in the minors have ended or at worst have near & definitive return dates. Aaron Hill & Carlos Ruiz were recently activated, Brandon Belt & Grady Sizemore returned today from the minors & DL respectively, Geovany Soto & Andrew Bailey are set to rejoin their teams within the week, and Josh Johnson is feeling great and should be back after only a couple more missed starts. Though both Jose Contreras & Brandon McCarthy were lost and had to be sacrificed for roster spots, barring any new disasters, this team should have a full & healthy roster shortly.

Almost as promising as the imminent return to active duty of those mentioned above is that this team has managed to stay within striking range with not only so many injured, but with so many playing poorly as well. To date, this team has seen terrible and in some cases career worst starts from Albert Pujols, Dustin Pedroia, Alex Rios, Geovany Soto, Aaron Hill, and Nick Swisher, basically half my starting offense and many of whom I was counting on to carry my offensive categories.

If these players can just regress somewhat to the mean and the return of my wounded signals the start of a healthy period for my squad, maybe this team can make a run at its league title and maybe more. Good thing it's still only May.

Of course, as soon as I'm done writing (and gloating) about how my AC team is finally getting healthy, it gets announced Wandy Rodriguez is being pulled from his start tomorrow due to elbow soreness & is scheduled for a precautionary MRI.

The Fantasy Gods sure have a cruel sense of humor this year.

It's FAAB Sunday, toughest day in the fantasy baseball week. Each week, we need to determine not only who we need to pick up and how much to bid, but also who to drop in their place. We've all had difficult decisions to make on who to drop over the years, some that may have come back to haunt us. In my high stakes history, I still think back to my multiple drops of Ben Zobrist in 2009 and of Brian Matusz last year just before their respective tears for the balance of those seasons. Each of those drops not only likely cost me money, but also fantasy baseball peace of mind. It may not be the greatest sportsmanship, but I can't help but root against the players I drop. It sucks to see them put up monster stats for a competitor when those stats should be "rightfully" mine.

Those who have read this blog may have seen me once compare Steve Jupinka to the Anti-Christ and Lindy Hinkelman to Satan. I was just kidding guys. :D For those who don't get my sense of humor (most don't ), it was meant as compliments for both these unbelievable players. I know, I know, strange way to compliment someone.

Anyway, we all know that if we want to find where the devil truly is, we need to look no further than the one, the only.......Alexi Ogando!!!! Ok, maybe he's not the devil, but he's definately my personal fantasy baseball demon this year. I hate Alexi Ogando.

I had drafted Ogando for three of my teams when there was still the possibility that Neftali Feliz would be placed in the Texas rotation leaving the closer role for Ogando. When Feliz was kept the closer, I dropped Ogando for all three teams before he ever threw a pitch this season figuring his lack of innings the previous season, the fact that he was only stretched out for one start during the spring, his lack of a 3rd pitch, his flyball tendencies in a hitter's park, and Ryan's assertion that he would be returned to a setup role at the 1st opportunity would result in no big loss by dropping him. After all I had drafted him as a potential closer, not as a fill-in starter anyway.

On April 11th, while watching Ogando dominate the Tigers in his 2nd start of the season, I posted my regrets for dropping him on the boards. I called myself an idiot. A couple of my more charitable fellow players said I was wrong to call myself an idiot and that we all make mistakes. Revisiting this issue nearly two months later, I've come to the conclusion.....I am an idiot! Since that April 11th start, Ogando's continued pitching flawlessly. His current record....5-0, 43 k's, 1.81 era, 0.87 whip. Are you kidding me????? Start after start, I hope the pain will stop and this will be the one he gets lit up. Start after start he puts up more zero's culminating in Monday's 4-0 complete game shutout over the White Sox. I hate Alexi Ogando.

I am trying to find some positives. Maybe the teams I dropped him from were small satellites and not the higher priority leagues. Oh wait, the teams I dropped him from were my AC Main Event, Auction Championship, & Ultimate teams. OK, that didn't work. Well, maybe the players I dropped him for are producing and helping me stay competitive in those leagues. Oh wait, I dropped him for Chris Tillman in two of those leagues and Andrew Cashner in the other. None are presently still on my roster. OK, strike two. Hmmmm, what's left to try. He won't go undefeated forever?? Even that, I'm not so sure of anymore. I hate Alexi Ogando.

Ogando's next start is today at 3pm. I hope he has a game reminiscent of Jaime Garcia's last night, just worse. I hate Alexi Ogando. Ok, maybe hate's too strong a word. How about really really really dislike. ;)

Chasing the NFBC - A Fantasy Baseball Blog

Post by Glenneration X » Mon May 30, 2011 1:37 am

Week 9 of 27 is in the books, we're at the 1/3 mark of the season.

My NFBC Main Event teams have pretty much held par, both currently in 3rd of their respective leagues. The inevitable decline I foresaw for my NYC team has not yet started. Maybe the team can remain above water until its injured gets healthy. Posey won't be one as I dropped him last night, but the balance hopefully can return sometime in the next few weeks.

A lot of my other teams took hits in the standings last week, partially because of the deterioration in counting stats caused by the recent rash of injuries to players I have on multiple teams. However, the biggest hits were caused by blowup starts by some of the pitchers that had performed really well for me to date....til this weekend! The worst hit was taken by my SCL squad who saw Jaime Garcia's start on Saturday singlehandedly cost the team 8 points and 5 spots in the standings. Wow. Honestly, I didn't even think one start could still have that big of a negative effect this late in the season. I guess in the Year of the Pitcher Part II, the ERA & WHIP categories are so tightly packed that a huge move up or down the standings can be made from one or two big starts (whether positive or negative). The other team destroyed by its pitchers this weekend is my Ultimate. The Nolasco/Masterson combo yesterday cost me 10 points in WHIP & ERA, yes 10 points....again wow! Unfortunately I had this combo going on several of my other teams as well, not fun. Yes Max, you weren't alone in pitching pain this weekend.

The main focus of my FAAB last night was on three players, two costly, one cheap. EY2, Mike Morse, & Javy Guerra.

EY2 was probably my #1 target last night as several of my teams have performed well in the power cats but very poorly in SB's. EY2 is one of those players that can have an immediate & huge impact in steals and does have a few possible paths to playing time. He's definately a roll of the dice as he has competition at all the positions he plays and he's poor defensively, but here's a player that could throw up a dozen steals in two weeks with regular PT. I managed to pick him up for 3 teams and had to spend in the 100's for each one. Cheaper backup speed options were available in a currently injured but close to returning Julio Borbon & a just returned to action Nyjer Morgan and I picked them up for 4 and 2 teams respectively as well, and for a lot less FAAB. I think between these 3 players, I've infused a ton of speed into my rosters, hopefully the effect on the standings will reflect that.

Where I needed an infusion of power, or a replacement corner, or a replacement OF, I made a play on Morse. I knew he'd be expensive as he's in the midst of a red-hot power streak, has dual eligibility, and has a potential clear path to playing time with the possible season ending injury to Adam Laroche. However, I had just picked up Lance Nix for 7 teams, as well as Hinske & Thome on a few others, last week in a much cheaper infusion of power. With those players recently rostered and Morse's likely BA drain, I kept from overbidding and held my bids on Morse to the low 100's. I still managed to get him for 3 of my teams. With both Nix & Morse on so many of my squads, here's to hoping Laroche decides to fix his shoulder immediately.

With many of my closer situations in disarray, this week's flavor of the week for me was Guerra. It seems every week I make plays on a new closer in waiting, and every week that player keeps waiting. There are a few potential options in the LA bullpen and any could emerge. Guerra got the last save in that bullpen and my gut tells me he gets the next opportunity. Maybe if he does, he runs with it. 4 of my teams now hopes he does.

The starting pitcher pools for my leagues were pretty barren this week, so outside of a fill-in pitcher here and there, for the most part I stayed away from those free agents.....for the most part. My biggest bid this week and likely my biggest bid ever was for a starting pitcher. Roy Oswalt. He was available for my Hot Tub league and I obviously wanted him. A true plug-in week after week ace, I thought about going all in on him, especially after losing both Wandy & Homer to injury this week. However, I'm in 3rd in this league and wanted to save some funds for tweaks that will almost definately be necessary during the 4 month balance of the season. I bid $428 of my remaining $534 of FAAB on him and won. The 2nd bid was only $322, so I left $106 on the table. Still, for a player like Oswalt, I'd rather overbid by $100 than underbid by $1.

1/3 of the season down, still a long way to go. Full slate of games on tap to follow on this rainy holiday in New York. Enjoy your Memorial Day everyone and God Bless America.

Glenn,

In a league where I was desperate for power, I bid my stack minus $90 on Hosmer a few weeks ago and so far its working out well. Compared to who I would have played, Hosmer has been gigantic. And until last week, I was getting the people I wanted anyway for $1-$4.

So if Roy Oswalt was the puzzle piece you needed, I'm completely on-board with your decision there. Good luck.

Great thread, my friend!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Another FAAB Sunday come and gone.

This week the players I seemed to target most frequently and win for my team were Alexi Casilla, David Freese, & Javy Guerra.

I actually drafted Alexi Casilla for seven of my teams as a cheap MI speed option but dropped him from each of those teams during his early season struggles & reduced playing time. With his recent torrid streak and uptick in steals, I rostered back for five teams where I needed some help at MI or speed.

David Freese is starting to make some progress in his rehab. When healthy he's a solid option at a ridiculously week & devastated position in the middle of a strong heart of the Cards batting order. Where I needed some corner help and/or could afford to stash a player for a few weeks, I decided to grab him now on the very cheap and won him for four of my teams.

Javy Guerra remains my LA closer situation lottery ticket. Anything can happen in that mess of a bullpen, but recent usage patterns have convinced me that he's got as good a shot as anyone & better than most to come out of that quagmire as the one getting the save chances. We'll see. I picked him up for three more teams bringing my total teams rostering Guerra to seven. Man, would that be a boon to my fantasy prospects if I guessed right. I did grab Matt Guerrier for my Ultimate squad where I already had Guerra rostered. No reason not to cover my bet with so much on the line.

None of the players referenced above cost much in FAAB. I did make one heavy play this week.....Aaron Crow. :(

When the announcement was made early in the week that Crow would be taking over the Royals closer role and I saw that he was available for my NYC Main Event team, it seemed a perfect union. My NYC team's closer situation had been devastated by injury and lost opportunities as Broxton, Lyon, & Eduardo Sanchez all let me down. I hadn't gotten a save in weeks and the situation for that category was feeling desperate. Early in the week, I put in an initial very high bid. However, as the news coming out of Royals camp kept leaning towards a possible return of Soria to the role, I steadily lowered my bid during the course of the week. I didn't lower it enough. Sunday night I bumped it back up some right before the deadline as it was announced Soria would need two more clean outings to reclaim the role. I figured my desperate saves situation made the hope that he'd blow one of those two chances a gamble worth taking. It ended up only taking one more clean outing, as Monday night Soria was renamed the closer. $170 in FAAB down the drain. Nice.

Last week's multiple team expensive FAAB pickups have turned out to be a mixed bag in results so far. Morse has continued his ridiculous hot streak and has really supplemented my power for the teams I was able to roster him on. EY2 on the other hand has gotten way too many days off and with the recent callups of Blackmon & Nelson, may be getting more. Still a long way to see how these two pickups play out, but the early results couldn't be more to the opposite extremes.

One quick sidenote on a much less prestigious player I picked up last week, JR Towles. He did contribute a HR & 4 RBI's, but that was in concert with a .118 BA so this isn't a note extolling my FAAB prowess. The reason I bring him up is that he was my choice (yes, very limited choice) as a replacement for Buster Posey on my NYC Main Event team. What makes this noteworthy isn't the pickup itself, but what led up to it. During the Buster Posey thread, where I joined in the debate on whether home plate collisions should be addressed in future MLB rule changes, I also added a one-line question of whether Posey was worth stashing at the time or whether he should just be dropped. At the time, there was conflicting reports on whether Posey would return this season or not. The question was in the midst of the greater debate and only one line and I'm guessing got lost & went unnoticed by most in all the posts during that thread. However, one person did notice it and sent me his thoughts privately so that my question would be answered. That person was Steve Jupinka. I feel a bit awkward mentioning this because the post was sent privately, however I thought it such a classy move that it deserved kudos. Steve's an extremely class act, but isn't alone in such acts in the high stakes community. The giving of advice, the helping of our competition is something I often see amongst some of the greatest in our hobby. I often extol the high stakes community I've recently joined and these acts are indicitive of why I'm so impressed by it. How often elsewhere in society do competitors in the same arena help each other when the giving of that help can end up hurting their own goals? Here it happens all the time. Thanks Steve and thanks to all others who've shown the same generosity in the past.

Ever have one of those weeks? You know the kind, where everything seems to go bad. I know you have, we all have. Well in fantasy, I had one this past week.

I should have known how the week would turn out when it began with the announcement Monday morning that Aaron Crow, my only big FAAB pickup of last week, had lost his closer's role before even one single save opportunity. Little did I know then that was to be the highlight of my week.

This past week was one that saw the various contests' message boards, typically a fun safe haven for these contests, briefly turn into a place where I had to defend myself on topics ranging from Aaron Crow to the WCOFF.

This past week was one where I saw some of my most important teams spiral down the standings.

My NYC Main Event team finally buckling under the weight of crushing injury problems, today sits 25 points below where it was just two weeks ago as it's dropped from 3rd to 7th in the league during the same time frame.

My Auction Championship team, 1st in the standings under two weeks ago, now sits in 6th as it suffers through it's own injury issues.

Worst of all, my Ultimate team, having combined an offensive slump with blowup start after blowup start and blowup save opportunity after blowup save opportunity has lost an amazing 30+ points over the past couple weeks and seen a collapse in the standings from 3rd to an incredible 14th in that same brief time. Is that even possible this late in the season??? I guess I've proven it is.

I do still have a few teams doing well. However, this past week was one that saw my best performing team of the season, currently sitting 2nd in the WCOFB overall, deal with more questions on that contest's viability as the WCOFF's promised deadline came and went without the anticipated announcement or new information on the resolution of its payment issues.

With all that, the most painful part of the week was the way I ended it, as this past week was one that saw me make unbelievable and inexcusable errors in FAAB and the setting of lineups. No, not in the players I bid on or decided to start, but in the simple use of the software.

While finalizing bids for my NYC Main Event team, I initially had Anthony Rizzo on top of a group of corner infield contingency bids. My bid for Rizzo was $179. My bid for my top contingency, Edwin Encarnacion, was $2. As the deadline approached, I decided I wanted two corners if possible, but only if one was Rizzo. In order to assure this, I decided to break Rizzo out into his own bid group rather than copy the entire original group to assure I wouldn't get two of the other contingency corners if I was outbid on Rizzo. So after breaking out Rizzo, I edited the top player in the remaining group from Rizzo to Encarnacion. But I forgot to edit the bid price!!!! Arghhhh!!!! Needless to say I won Encarnacion.....for $179. I reached out to Greg & Tom to see if there was some way they could correct my mistake, maybe accessing the previous saves as proof of the true intent of my bid. They couldn't and advised that the bid had to stand. :( It's probably best. Allowing someone to correct a bid after FAAB has run, even if it was an honest mistake, would create a precedent that could only open up a potentially very ugly can of worms. This contest doesn't need that headache. So the bid stands, Encarnacion.....for $179....only $177 of it completely wasted. Almost half of my remaining FAAB gone, on a stupid mistake on my part. I was furious with myself.

I had to get over it. It was going to be hard. Still, Monday came and with it came a fresh week for the contests, along with a fresh slate of games on board that evening. Checking box scores late last night, I noticed that Wandy Rodriguez pitched well, made a mental note of it, and looked forward to seeing how his start would affect those teams for which I had him rostered, amongst them my AC Main Event team. I started checking the Live Scoring for my teams. First the Ultimate....yikes....14th place???? What the hell???? I had to get away from that & went on to check another team. NYC Main Event, ugh...another bad night. This wasn't going well. Still, time to try another. I went to check my AC Main. Wait, where was Wandy's start? Also why wasn't Pedroia in the lineup and Headley at Coors?? Why was a DL'd Harang still in there?? You're kidding me!!!!! Somehow, while setting lineups for my 16 teams, I must not have saved my lineup changes for the AC Main. I couldn't believe it. Less than 24 hours after my ridiculous FAAB mistake, I topped it off with this ridiculous lineup error. It's one thing to have injuries or bad performances or even bad decisions affect your teams, it's another altogether to sabotage your teams with carelessness.

I immediately stopped running through live scores, shut my computer, cursed myself, cursed myself again, and went to bed. I had had it. I was angry, mostly at myself. I felt burnt. I was disillusioned. Typically the first up in my house each morning, I usually start the day by checking my leagues while having my morning cup of coffee. This morning, I checked the weather. Typically, during the course of my work day, I manage to check the message boards or the fantasy news sites a couple times to help break it up. Today was easily my most productive day at work since the season started as I didn't check the sports sites once. Typically after the kids go down for the night, a big part of how I relax at night is by checking the box scores & live scoring. Today I watched a movie. I had had it with fantasy sports.

Then I remembered Doughy's post a few days ago, the one where he wrote about the fairness or lack of it in fantasy baseball. In it he referenced the yin and the yang. Although not what he meant exactly, I started to apply it to my week from hell. I began to think that coming off such a bad week, it has to even out eventually, doesn't it? In fact, following that line of thinking, I had to be due for an incredible week! Ever have that kind of week? You know the kind, where everything seems to go right. I know you have, we all have. I just checked the box scores. Alexi Ogando got smoked today by the Yankees. Looks like things are looking up already.

Chasing the NFBC - A Fantasy Baseball Blog

Post by Glenneration X » Sat Jun 18, 2011 2:55 am

Earlier this week, Josh Johnson, the ace of the Florida Marlins (as well as the ace of both my AC Main Event & Auction Championship teams), was transfered from the 15 day to the 60 day DL. Wha?? How does a guy go from hoping to be ready for his next start when first pulled from his game a month ago with a "forearm contusion" to missing a minimum of 2 months? Pitchers, that's how. The news on Johnson has continuously changed since first injured from possibly making his next start to having shoulder inflammation & having to go on the DL to being ready by the beginning of June to being ready by the middle of June to finally being transfered to the 60-day and out until the All Star break. However, the news now coming out of the Florida camp is that he should definately be ready once this DL stint is done. Uh-huh, I'll believe it when I see it.

There were two things that immediately came to mind for me when I first heard the recent 60-day DL news. First was.....never, ever trust injury updates that comes from a manager or player.

The second was more of a memory than observation. I thought back to the time just after the end of my AC Main Event draft, a time many of us were roaming around the draft room checking out draft boards and the drafts of other teams. At the time I was pretty happy with my team and was curious of the thoughts of other players. Most gave your standard comments or critiques....mentioning the categories they thought I was strong or weak in or the players they thought I grabbed early or got at great value or just gave the nondescript but polite "nice team, should be competitive" .

Craig Kielinski however offered something different. He said, "You sure have a lot of injury risk." My answer was that I don't fear injury risk, that I look at it as a buying opportunity that could result in huge dividends if the gambles pay off. His response...."Even with pitchers?" I had drafted Josh Johnson coming off last year's shoulder issue & Matt Cain who had some arm issues in the spring as my top two starters, Andrew Bailey with his own spring arm issues as one of my closers, and threw in Brandon McCarthy & Aaron Harang with their recent arm problems for good measure. However reports on Johnson, McCarthy, & Harang were that all were healthy and throwing well, Cain was over his arm problems & ready for the season, and though Bailey would definately miss some time, his reports were that the injury was not as significant as feared and he may be back shortly after the start of the season. So my answer to Craig was no, not even for pitchers. Of course with Johnson, McCarthy & Harang all on the DL, Bailey missing 2 months before returning & sitting at a mighty 3 saves, and Cain not pitching as well as in seasons past, it may be time to rethink this theory.

I have had other opportunities to learn this lesson. Back in 2006, coming off six straight first or second place finishes in the local league I played at the time, I probably took pitching injury risk to heights never seen before or since for me (or any team hoping to be competitive :( ) as my top 3 starters coming out of the draft were........Mark Prior, Ben Sheets, & AJ Burnett    . Needless to say there were many similar comments to Craig Kieliniski's coming out of that draft, though since this was a local league where ballbusting was not only commonplace but an art form, the comments & predictions for that team were a bit less optimistic and definately less polite. However they were accurate. This team ended my run of money finishes as I finished at or near the bottom of the final standings. I swore I would never try anything like that again.

After taking a year off from fantasy baseball when that league disbanded at season's end, I joined a new local league in 2008 (on a side note.....in my recent interview for the NFBC Zone, my memory failed me as I mentioned that I took 3 or 4 years off. After looking into it, I was shocked to find out that it was only one year. For those who often talk about taking off a season, see how long that one year felt like to someone who actually took it!!!). Though I "partially" learned my lesson and began to mitigate my pitching risk, I did roster Rich Harden for that season's local team and Chris Carpenter the next season for my 1st NFBC Main Event and they ended up playing significant roles in helping propel those teams into their eventual money finishes.

Emboldened by those results, 2010 marked a partial return to my former levels of pitching risk as either Brandon Webb, Eric Bedard, and yes even Ben Sheets once again found their way on just about every one or another of my teams last year. Some of my teams were even lucky enough to have a combination of these Gehrig/Ripken wannabe's rostered. Ugh. That worked out well.

Yet here we are again, 2011, more pitching risk, more stellar results. Some people never learn.

Its nice that you got Wandy's second start if you were able to take out Harang. Still, reading about that- not getting changes saved, totally sucks. We've all done it at some point and its the pits. It feels like the whole world is conspiring against you.

I often debate with other fantasy players about injury risk. A few guys told me not to worry about any false harbingers of doom with Cain's sore forearm. Cain has totally proven me wrong- its same ol' Matt Cain this year. But I can totally seeing myself making that statement about your team collectively . I was more thinking out-loud more than criticizing, because obviously you have to get value somewhere, and you did. Harang, Johnson, and McCarthy were all pitching well before they got hurt, for where you drafted them, and Bailey still has a bulk of the season to go. And Cain is Cain.

Regarding JJ, I'm a little torn on his injury because it was a fluke technically, getting hit by a ball, but on the other hand pitchers will react to injuries differently. He's starting to develop into a Rich Harden clone, where neither has pitched badly, practically ever, but just can't stay on the field.

Ellsbury and Reyes are mammoth commodities this year who, while yes not pitchers, definitely shook off any injury concerns, and are rewarding owners big time- owners other than me.

So, as you know, we always want to take a step back and ponder whether a strategy was wrong only because of the results , and not the method that led to them.

Glenn, I just checked your draft board from that day and saw that you hit on Chacin and Pineda, and Ogando (pretend you kept him ) so since it was Main Event week one I was probably counting Pineda as risky too. Still, that's a great staff you put together, injuries or no.

Today is Father's Day. With all respect to Jules and the younger still single members of our contest, this is our day.

As part of a Father's Day tradition started a few years back, my family will be spending the day at Southhaven Park where my father & mother, both my brothers & their families, my cousin & his family, my father & mother-in-law, my brother-in-law & his family, and various extended families several times removed will be getting together for a BBQ picnic. As part of the festivities, there's always a softball or kickball game that adds to the fun. Baseball (or a slightly varied form of it) part of our Father's Day tradition as it should be. As I sit here waiting for my wife to get my 3 year old son and our twin 1-year old baby girls ready (and herself of course ;) ), I'm thinking about my Dad and the role baseball has played in our lives together.

I think back to my first memories of catch with my Dad and how I noticed even then how hard he could throw and how he seemed to catch everything. Someday I wanted to be able to throw & catch like that.

I think back to Little League and how my father often couldn't make the game to see me play because he was always working two jobs to support his family, but how the games when he was there always seemed more special. Those games were my Little League World Series. I also remember how proud I was to help him in later years when he had more time and was able to coach my little brother's team. I considered myself his right hand man.

I remember my father buying me my first pack of baseball cards and how excited "we" were that two Mets, Rusty Staub and Wayne Garrett came in that pack. I also remember how upset I was and couldn't bring myself to tell him that I lost both Mets cards when learning to flip cards at school the next day. :( Little did I know then that I was probably just a wee bit more excited about the two Mets cards than he was.

I remember my Dad taking me and my brothers to a Mets game or even a Yankees game at least once a year. It was always a great day. Since we couldn't go often, it always seemed that we went on ball day or bat day and I'd always get some souvenier from the game. A program or yearbook was also always a must. Seaver was my favorite player then and Koosman was my Dad's. It was always an extra treat if one of them were pitching.

I remember driving to work with my Dad when I worked with him during summer breaks from college and listening to day games in traffic while debating whether Gooden & Strawberry would be the greatest pitcher & power hitter in history. I was always the optimist, he the pessimist. Turns out the saying is right, father knows best.

I remember when my baseball playing days were over and my brothers, friends, and I put together an organized softball team, my Dad was the coach, designated hitter, and occasional pitcher. I remember until my brothers and I bought him cleats, he would always play in his loafers, he always wore loafers at the time, still does.

I remember when my brother joined a face to face Strat-o-matic league, he first talked me into joining and then my father. I remember the satellite series we'd play each season at my Dad's house, brother against brother, father against son, for the entire night.

I remember when my brother talked me into joining a local fantasy football league a decade ago, then my father, a league we all still play in together to this day.

My father also plays fantasy baseball. So do I. ;) I remember buying my father his first NFBC team last year for the holidays. Now that's my gift to him for every birthday or holiday. His Father's Day gift this year is a NFFC 60's satellite DC draft, the one taking place next Friday night. He already knows. He's already looking forward to it. We even talked about partnering up for a NFBC Main Event or Auction this year. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but maybe next year. If it ever does, it'll be another great memory I'll share with my Dad.

As mentioned earlier, I now have a 3 1/2 year old son. I look forward to creating memories for him and having baseball and fantasy baseball be a part of them, just like those I have with my Dad. Today's kickball game may be the start of those memories. In a few years, an NFBC Main Event live draft will hopefully be part of them as well.

Happy Father's Day everyone. Remember, it's our day.

Chasing the NFBC - A Fantasy Baseball Blog

Post by Glenneration X » Sat Jul 02, 2011 9:49 am

When I joined the NFBC in 2009, I started a morning ritual that I've maintained during the course of each fantasy baseball season since. After dragging myself out of bed and grabbing a quick smoke on the deck, I sit down with my first cup of coffee and laptop to go through the daily standings for each of my fantasy baseball leagues. After seeing how the previous night's stats affected my standings, I then can go about the rest of my day. It's a ritual now 3 years running and one I look forward to each morning.

Last September, back when I started this blog, that ritual always began with a glance at the NFBC Main Event overall standings. Chasing Jupinka & trying to hold off Gekko and others throughout most of the final month of the season, I couldn't wait each morning to see how my chase near the top of the overall had gone the previous night. This year, especially over the last month, has been a slightly different story. With my NYC Main Event team devastated by injury, spiraling, and having fallen almost completely out of relevance and my AC Main just trying to tread water for another month until Pujols and Josh Johnson's anticipated return can hopefully fuel a late run, checking out the Main Event overall standings just hasn't seemed to be a meaningful use of my morning time.

Today, I decided to check out those standings for the first time in a while. While my NYC team is in about a millionth place give or take, my AC team is 101st overall. An interesting spot. Certainly not in the serious running, but with half a season to go, certainly not out of it yet either. I'd feel a lot better about my chances with a healthy Pujols and JJ, but you never know. 100 other teams to pass. I thought I'd take a quick look through those 100 teams and see what names I recognize and what thoughts pop in my head about some of those I do.

94 – CC’s Desperados - Shawn Childs

If you had to pick one person whose NFBC exploits helped make him a fantasy sports "celebrity", it would be Shawn. Referenced as an expert in this year's Forecaster, part of the LABR, creator of Vu Fantasy, synonymous with the 75/75 draft strategy, a member of the inaugural NFBC HOF class, Shawn has become a household name in these parts. Still what strikes me most about him is how generous he always is with his knowledge and research. I've had the opportunity to speak to Shawn a few times over the years. He's always humble and genuine as well as interesting to talk to and doesn't ever seem to hold his thoughts close to the vest. He's exactly the same on the boards. A class act.

90 - FFBL's Finest - Kevin Kirves

I didn't know much about Kevin prior to this year. What I know about him now is simple…..he sucks!!!!! Just kidding. Kevin has been the top obstacle this year in my chase for the WCOFB overall. He passed me for 1st overall about a month ago and has been leading the event ever since. Recently he’s started running away with it, even after losing Pujols. Huh? Kevin, something like that is supposed to bring you back to the pack. I hope I can stay in the hunt and battle with Kevin the entire year....and I also hope when all is said and done, we're both rewarded for our efforts.

82 - Redbirds - Shane Schroeder

Is this the same guy who won the inaugural FFOC million? If it is, that must have been nice!!! I still can picture those ads with him in the white jacket and hat with all that money sitting on the table in front of him.

81 - Get Out of My Way - Gaeten Lavoie

Canada in the house!! An annual participant in the Hot Tub league, a helluva player. I'm struck by the difference between his aggressive team name and the persona he exhibits on the boards. From the classy demeanor I've seen from him, I'd think a more appropriate team name would be "Excuse me Sir, Mind if I Pass.”

78 - Team Zwickel - Dave Zwickel

I met Dave briefly at last year's live NFFC NYC drafts. A very nice guy, both humble and enthusiastic. Drafting with his brother, this truly is Team Zwickel.

62 - Team Gillis - Eddie Gillis

I've met Eddie at a few of these live events. The first time was at a break during my very first NFFC Main while on line waiting to use my drink ticket. Long line, man these boys can drink. Eddie and I were in the same league. He complimented some of my picks to that point and asked me my opinion on Nate Burleson, who he was thinking of drafting with his next pick. I gave him my thoughts. Eddie Gillis, who had won about a zillion dollars in fantasy to that point, asking a guy at his first NFFC his opinion on a player. Obviously just small talk, as come December Eddie was finishing in the money while I was playing in the consolation round.

60 - Spartacus - Bob Mazur

One of the very few 3-time Main Event league winners in the NFBC, I’m pretty sure he's also won the last two SCL's. I think he's one of the more underrated players in our game. Duke Snider, RIP.

57 - BN Bears - Ken O'Brien

My smoking partner during this year's AC Auction & Main at Bally's. During each break, we'd meet up in the smoking room and chat about how the drafts were looking so far and what we hoped for going forward. A helluva nice guy that I'm glad to see doing so well.

50 - Incredible Hulking Us - Michael Edelman

Easily one of the nicest people I've met at the live events. The last couple years, he always seems to be one of the guys I end up walking around with after the drafts reviewing draft boards. We were in a Live DC draft together this year in AC. When I picked Cuerto right before the 2nd break where I perceived him to be great value, Mike was waiting for me at the break with his cellphone set for late updates to show me that Cuerto was just pulled from his start that night with arm trouble. Damn! When I picked Borbon with one of my last picks, Mike was again waiting for me at the end of the draft, cellphone in hand, to let me know that Texas management just announced that Borbon was in danger of losing his starting CF job to Murphy. Damn!!! He and Massatto seemed a bit too happy at my less than enthusiastic gratitude for the updates.

41 - Cocktails and Dreams - Chad Schroeder

In my opinion, hands down the best player in fantasy sports. A straight shooter on the boards, I respect the way he handles himself, especially considering what he's dealing with in regards to the WCOFF issues. I'm not sure I'd handle it as well as he has. In regards to his achievements, wow. His list of accomplishments are ridiculous. A pastime for most of us, he's turned this into a living. When I grow up and get a real job, I want one just like that.

40 – The Chamelions – Chris Plouffe

Going into the final week last season, my goal of catching Jupinka for the NFBC crown was a dead stick, and what remained for me to shoot for was holding off Gekko for 2nd overall. Chris wasn’t really a thought at the time. Well during the course of that final week, Chris soared up the top 10 of the standings passing me on the season’s last day. So on the last day of the season, not only did I lose my month long battle with Gekko for 2nd overall, but Chris passed me as well for 3rd. One day, a drop from 2nd overall going into that last day to 4th overall by the end of that last day, $12,500.00 poorer. It stung, but it would have stung much worse if I wasn’t passed by such great players.

33 - Baseball Furies - Mike Massatto

Mikey the Mouth putting his money where his mouth is!!! It's one thing to talk sh*t, it's another thing altogether to back it up and Mike's doing just that. Mike and I chatted a lot at this year's AC & NYC live drafts. He's a really good guy. We were also interviewed together for a Sirius show being broadcast from the NYC NFBC draft. As part of our interview, we were each asked to answer a question from a caller. I went first. The question…..”What do I think of Jay Bruce as a sleeper?” Hmmmm, that wasn’t too tough and I answered pretty easily with my thoughts. Now, it was Mike’s turn. The question…..”In an AL only 22 team keeper auction league, what dollar values would you apply to each of the Red Sox infielders to the 3rd decimal point?” The response from Mike……well needless to say, the question didn’t get answered. I’m exaggerating, but only slightly. :D

31 – Team Jurney – Robert Jurney

Bob Jurney was the defending champion my 1st year with the NFBC. I remember reading a write up on him and his championship season in Fantasy Sports Magazine that preseason. A great player, I don’t think he nearly gets his due as a former champion and one of the best in the game.

30 - Air Lar - Larry Schechter

One of the best CDM players ever, I met Larry this year as he was being interviewed right before me for the Sirius show I mentioned earlier. He also happened to be in my NYC Main Event league this year. He had the first overall pick, but after making his pick at the end of the 2nd, he didn’t realize that he needed to make another pick to start off the 3rd. He believed as done in NFFC drafts, the NFBC used 3rr. Huh? It must have been nice to realize that he could draft 15 picks earlier than he thought. Of course, he then goes out and has been top 3 in our league all year including having recently led it. Sometimes you just have to say, when you're good you're good.

27 - Roy's Outlaws - Roy Ericson III

I met Roy this year at Shandler's First Pitch in NYC, nice guy. I almost joined his local Keeper league but it was just too much of a hike to the live draft on a Friday night after work. It's interesting to see Roy doing so well as I thought he was mostly an auction guy. Auction guys, CDM guys, all kicking my a$$ this year.

22 - Quahogs - Steve Jupinka

The Anti-Christ's in the house!!! Seriously, one of the best of the best. Inducted with Childs, Steve’s the other member of our inaugural HOF class and also our reigning Champion. Funny on the boards and the quickest on the draw with a picture post for any occasion. I've met Steve at a couple live drafts and he's as much a class act in person as he is on the boards. A champion we can be very proud of. One thing though, I thought I read on the boards this year that he was having a bad year!!! Well I guess 22nd overall is bad for some.

20 - The Pale King - Bob Particelli

I met Bob for the first time this year prior to our Live DC draft, good guy. We've been battling, going back and forth at the top of that league for the entire year. A helluva player doing well everywhere this year, he currently leads me by a point, he'll be tough to beat. Before I ever met Bob, he had a few message board comments when it was announced that I received the 1st pick for my AC Main Event draft. He complained that it always seemed like I got the first pick in these drafts (not true by the way, I don't get the first pick nearly enough). Of course, within the hour it was announced that Bob received the first pick in our Ultimate draft. With Pujols having an off year and out for two months, I bet we both now wish that we'd gotten lower picks.

15 - Edwards Kings - Wayne Edwards

The inspiration for my blog, Wayne's weekly rundown of his thoughts in FAAB, lineup moves, and team management are a must read for me. I remember looking at his league before the draft and seeing the killer roster of fantasy sharks that were part of this draft and thinking, no way anyone does well coming out of that nightmare. I was wrong. I’m rooting for Wayne to continue doing well so he continues writing and I can continue reading his thoughts.

11- Lunatic Addiction - Jim Christie

I met Jim when he came up to me this year and introduced himself by saying that he wanted to meet me. You know you've made a name for yourself when a great player and class act like Jim goes out of his way to say hello. Unfortunately, Jim then signed up for a Live Online DC that I was registered for and joked that it was because I was in it.....that's the downside, great players like Jim want to play against you!!!

10 - Pine Tar Pros - Ty Parsons

A recent ally in the message board squabble over the pitcher's DL rule that dominated the boards last week, I know he was frustrated by the debate. We chatted in PM's after I left the debate. It was interesting to see him doing this well in the Overall today. Ty, don't let the BS distract you. Keep focused and keep kicking a$$, worry about the other stuff AFTER the big payday!

8 – Harry Crumb – Joe Anthony

Joe was one of the many “vocal” members of MLBC-1 that made it so much fun. I met Joe at the AC drafts this year and then again the next week in NYC, good guy. I remember looking over his NYC draft board with him and wondering how the hell he got Hanley with the seventh pick??? Then I looked at the rest of his draft and though “Uh oh”. Well Hanley hasn’t panned out so far, but the rest of his draft certainly has.

6 - Zefurs - KJ Duke

The antagonist in our message board pitcher’s DL rule debate, KJ's one of the biggest debators on these boards. He's also a helluva guy and great player. Most of all, he’s one of the most innovative players we have as his MLBC drafts are easily the most fun of any I take part in. He's also the creator of the NFBCK, the CR AL/NL only & combined keeper leagues, a rating system for high stakes which I think is the best out there, and a force behind many new rule ideas and changes. He's also as funny as it gets. After MLBC-1, KJ created a chatroom where some league issues could be discussed and a few of us could chat while watching (and betting against each other) during the playoff football games. It was an open chatroom whose web address KJ posted on the boards. At one point, someone came in with an alias who most assumed to be Gekko because of the way he interacted with Shawn. Shawn for one was sure it was him. They went back and forth for a while. Suddenly, I get a chatroom PM from KJ. The person antagonizing Shawn was actually KJ pretending to be Gekko pretending to be this other person. It was ingenious, and unbelievably funny. I already can't wait until next year's MLBC draft.

5 - Sack & Godfather - Ken Magner

I was lucky enough this year to draw Ken Magner in BOTH my Main Event leagues. Of course, he's doing well in both and dominating one. Though we've been on opposite sides of message board debates recently, he struck me as a really good guy at the live drafts. He still does. While watching him draft with his son Chip, I thought ahead to the day when I would hopefully be attending these drafts with my own son, Joseph. I hope we have as good a time and as great a bonding experience as Ken and Chip seemed to have.

4 - Eric's Liver - Jason DuPonte

I met Jason at last year's NFBC after the Main Event and prior to the Super we were both in, nice guy. He and Gekko were discussing draft strategy at the time. I didn't know who he was at the time, but figured he must know his sh*t if Gekko was asking for his opinion on his draft. Though Jason didn't do well in our Super last year, he's got teams 4th and 16th overall in our Main Event this year. Yeah, I guess he does know his sh*t.

1 - Bob Enzyte - Lindy Hinkelman

What's there to say? He has a huge lead in the Main Event overall as well as very competitive teams in both the Auction & Live DC overalls. If he manages to hold on and win another Main after what he accomplished just two years ago, I think there would be little doubt on who the best fantasy baseball player on the planet is. The Lindy..... must be nice to have an unbelievable accomplishment named after you.

So 100 great players ahead of me, they’ll be tough to pass. There are many great players ahead of me that I haven’t mentioned here and other great players behind me. Hopefully the next time I take a peek at the overall and check out who’s ahead of me, I have less, not more memories or thoughts that pop in my mind.

You have a great memory GX, interesting reading too. Maybe you could be the player profile writer for my high stakes ranking list.

Nice job Glenn! Look forward to those draft days with your son, Joseph. I've also been lucky enough to share an NFFC draft with my daughter who knows nothing about the sport. To this day, she still talks about the experience and reminding me I had forgot to cross Deion Branch off of my cheat sheets and was about to call out his name. She spoke up and saved me! It was a terrific bonding day. You and your son will have your day(s)!
