Yesterday during ShandlerTime, it was mentioned that 3b is very strong this year and it's best to wait if you don't get Arod. Even Mr. Shandler said he'd take a MI before a 3B.



Well, I don't see it.



Am I the only one that thinks 3B is pretty weak in 2006?

The title of your thread is a bit misleading--clearly the catcher position is the weakest.



Having said that, yes, the 3B corps is not as strong as "Dr. HQ" would have us believe. A-Rod is great, and there are a handful of very good options at that position. After those players, however, things get pretty mediocre in a hurry.



One thing to remember is that several players who will be taken early in the draft (Cantu, Figgins, etc.) carry 3B eligibility, but teams will most likely not be using them at that position.

But, I did mean for this thread to rate the 4 IF positions and decide the weakest. Assuming Figgins and Cantu are used at 2B, I think 3b is the weakest of all 4. In fact, it wouldn't suprise me to see one of them end up in the 3b slot for some teams.

It is a position with some name guys that are really rest of the pack and not elite.

I think SS is weaker. Along with the above mentioned guys, don't forget Miguel Cabrera also qualifies at 3b. Then there are intriguing bounce back canidates like Rolen, Beltre, & Lowell. And some decent youngings. To me I still think SS is weakest.

Well, I guess this is why we all draft differently. Of the four IF, I would say 2nd is the weakest. There are A LOT of questions among what top talent there is at 2B...Soriano in RFK and unhappy....Kent is 38...Giles may be batting leadoff and how will he react to a full time stint lik that....Cantu is 24 and has one full ML year under his belt.



I think 3B is deeper. To me, a litte more steady, proven talent. But the other posters are right. If you look at Figgins, Cantu, and Cabrera as 3B the talent pool is much deeper.

I think the thing that makes me think 3b is so weak this year is the big drop off in talent after the top guys. Of course there is a drop after Arod. But after Wright, Ramirez, Cabrerra and maybe Blalock there is a serious drop.



At 2b & SS, at least you got guys in the 2nd tier that will hit for average, steal you some bases, score some runs and make the dropoff less severe. Add to that the drop in the top guys this year (Soriano and Tejada) and I still say 3B is the category to watch out for.

3BASE also has CHAVEZ,ROLEN,CHIPPER,ENSBERG, MORA , GLAUS , BELTRE , and young ATKINS.

With CABRERA , FIGGINS , and CANTU i too thing this is a pretty good year for 3base.

I'm doing a study on this, this weekend, actually. I would tend to think they are all pretty equal, even first base, which has some doozies, even among the top 23, but to look at it subjectively is a fruitless exercise. You guys need New York Downunder in here since he's probably already done a study on it. He has a similar system to me and from there it's pretty easy to determine the exact amount of difference obove or below average each position is.
