Week 8 - Gekko Jeopardy

by Gordon Gekko
Each week I will pick the poster with the best response (as judged by Gekko) to my question. After ten weeks is up, I (or Greg) am going to put each weekly winner's name on a piece of paper, throw them into a hat, and pick an overall winner AT RANDOM. The overall winner will win free entry into the Web Content Panel Draft in March where the format is winner-take-all for a $500 NFBC credit.

Week 1

Question = This player has the best chance to be the 2007 NFBC version of fantasy football’s LaDainian Tomlinson. In other words, this player has the best chance at dominating all other fantasy players and carrying the most NFBC teams into “money” finishes.

Winners = EliGrimmett (Matt Holliday) & duggan (Alfonso Soriano)

Week 2

Question = In 2006 this player hit 15 or less homeruns in the major leagues. In 2007 he hit over 30 homeruns.

Winner = EliGrimmett (Kevin Kouzmanoff)

Week 3

Question = This pitcher never had 20 wins in a season until 2007.

Winners = headhunters (Ervin Santana) & poopy tooth (Jason Schmidt)

Week 4

Question = This player led the Major Leagues in RBI's in 2007.

Winners = poopy tooth and KJ Duke (David Ortiz)

Week 5

Question = This pitcher racked up the most saves for any pitcher who wasn't their team's closer on Opening Day 2007.

Winner = King of Queens (Akinori Otsuka)

Week 6

Question = This team won the 2007 World Series.

Winner = MGBMARTY (Detriot Tigers)

Week 7

Question = This 2007 rookie made the biggest impact in the NFBC.

Winner = Sheep (Delmon Young)

The Week 8 question is another viewer's choice question...This player had less than 10 stolen bases in 2006, and then stepped on it and produced more than 30 in 2007.

Message Board Posters...Who is this player and why?

Week 8 - Gekko Jeopardy

Who is Delmon Young?

While Young only managed 2 stolen bases in 126 AB with the Devil Rays, his minor league track record indicates that he should be a basestealing demon. Based on these credentials, Young should manage around 30 swipes this year -- that is, as long as he doesn't get hit with another long-term "bat flipping" suspension.

Week 8 - Gekko Jeopardy

by Mudster
Who is Shane Victorino?

Sure, he hasn't done much in the majors in terms of stealing bases, but in the minors Shane had a couple years of stealing over 40 bases. It seems that Victorino wants to get those stolen base numbers back this year and has been working with Phillies first base coach Davey Lopes on a daily basis learning all the angles to make him a major league basestealing threat. Victorino has told the Philidelphia Daily News that he plans on swiping 30-40 stolen bases this year. Victorino is projected to be batting second for the Phillies, so he should get ample opportunities to accumulate those stolen bases.

Thanks,

Mudster

Who is Nook Logan?

Named starter and most likely 1 or 2 hitter Had 23 sbs in 322 abs with Detroit in 2005. Nats will have to manufacture runs up to him and lopez to run wild 27 years old so 300 average last year though off from 3 year avereage, based on his age might see 283 average Possible Pods of 2 years ago

Gekko, just a joke obviously with Piazza...someone grabbed Victorino, so I'll have to look around and be back...good question though.

I'm new to the NFBC and the messages boards, so I'll bite. Couple of good replies, therefore, I'll go out on a limb (even if that limb breaks!).

Howie Kendrick 2B LAA

Angels led MLB in SBs and SB attempts in 2006. Much of it Figgins driven but a large number nonetheless.

Kendrick managed 25 SB in 2005 in 469 AB.

Swiped 15 bases in 2006 between AAA and Majors.

Howie only stole 6 bases at the Major league level but was only on bases 85-90 times. If he hits to expectations with a full time job, that should project to 12-15 SB with little improvement.

I wouldn't pay for nor draft for 30 SBs because I'm NOT expecting them, but this is just for entertainment purposes.

I think that was a very good answer Phoenix. not that the others weren't. There have been many good answers to this question. I'm only making note of it since you are new. Welcome, good luck, and I think you'll fit in nicely. I too like Kendrick, but he's going to high for my taste.

Speaking of limbs.... Who is Alex Sanchez?

Believe it or not, he's only 30 years young and has a chance to win the CF job for the Fish. Anyone remember the 81 bags he swiped from 02-03? Yes, that's ancient history, but he is only 1 year removed from a season where he hit .324 and stole 8 in 176 ABs. IF he wins the job and IF he gets 400 ABs he'll have a legitimate shot at swiping 20+.

No need to chastise, this post was more about creative thought than prognosticative power...

who is josh fields? he is playing baseball now- not qb- although i here the bears might be interested in a bo jackson type of deal. he stole 28 last year in 3a with an obp of .379. pods had surgery and was a step slow last year anyway. if josh has a good spring- he starts in left. if he keeps hitting he could move to center when pods returns- or at least see time there and at 3rd where crede has a bad back and will sit some. as the season wears on- if the sox are out of it- crede and dye could both be gone. if they are in it, he may have played so well that he keeps getting abs. with 500 abs he could steal 30- ozzie loves to run and even though fields k rate rivals adam dunns- those things don't seem to bother ozzie as much as some other managers.

Message Board Posters...Who is this player and why? The question asks "who will step on it"?

that player would be Kaz Matsui...

After Kaz was traded to Colorado from the Mets, his average went from .200 to .345. He stole 8 bases in 113 at bats, had 22 runs, 19 rbi's, and even 2 dingers. Not bad for someone the Mets gave up on...

In September, When every steal is precious for an NFBC title run, players like Reyes and Crawford will earn their keep big. They stole 9 and 7 respectively. In fact, 18 players stole more than the 5 Kaz stole in September. But what was interesting in my research was that 12 stole 5 in September. Players like Figgins, Rollins, and Furcal to name a few...

Kaz will start at 2nd for Colorado and bat lead off which is well worth a late round pick as most will remember him as a Met. I think a return to the speed he had in Japan won't happen, but 30 in a full season is easily do-able!! ;)

I think that this question is the difference between being in the $ and not, so I am keeping my best projected “stepped on it” close to the base. However, a will throw out a couple FAAB players that will get BIG FAAB bids if jobs open up. 1) Micheal Bourn to Run – who was written up nicely by KJ Duke “Bourn got in a few games in Sep for PHL and did nothing, but maybe enough of a taste to get over some nerves for next season. But's he's real fast. He stole 45 of 50 across AA/AAA. Also, the Phils will have a high-powered offense, so a speedy tablesetter will score. Batting either second or seventh to start the year will be CF Aaron Rowand. Rowand missed half of last season after trying to run thru a wall. He said he'd do it again with the game on the line. I believe him. He will do it again, and Bourn will get his shot, stealing 25 (which I will increase to 30 to qualify here) in half a season after coming off the NFBC waiver wire in July.” 2) Halo’s Shortstop Erick Aybar, over his last three minor league seasons, he's hit .310 and stole an average of 44 bases. If an injury hits, Aybar will get the call. 3) Gordon Gekko, looking at last years draft he did not have any steals.

Well then, how about Curtis Granderson...

1) As a freshman at the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2000, Granderson led the team with 7 home runs and 45 walks. He followed that with a strong sophomore season in which he hit .304, leading the team in runs, home runs and walks.

2) Granderson started the 2005 season with the Toledo Mud Hens where he again posted terrific numbers, hitting .290 with 15 home runs, 65 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 445 at bats.

3) Granderson only attempted 13 steals last year making 8 of them.

Granderson worked hard in the off season to increase his walk rate, and as a leadoff hitter, that probably will result in more SB attempts and just maybe 30+ stolen Bases... :D

from detnews.com:

"In the eyes of Granderson and others (read: Leyland and the front office), it would not be surprising to see Granderson improve a notch in all categories. He easily could hit closer to the .275-.280 range with 20-plus home runs. He should be stealing 20 or more bases. Definitely, he must chop down on the misses."

Dan how do you work hard in the offseason to increase your walk rate?

I read an article yesterday that I haven't been able to find today for the exact quote. But, from what I remember, It was working on his patience at the plate to draw more walks. Guess you're right though, cant really work on your walk unless you're a super model on the runway, etc... :D

I'll keep looking for the quote

Hey Mark

I guess I should not give any more answers on your thread because I am sure like sheep thinks if I do I will eliminate myself from the competition. If you can not have any fun with this then do not bother with a response. Some people take themselves so seriously. I am sure that in 2-3 weeks all will be taking these responses as the sole source of info for the draft. Get over yourself. We are ALL experts or just a bunch of people having fun.
