How are you pre-season sleepers doing?

Post by Edwards Kings » Thu May 17, 2007 1:13 am

Hunter Pence came up big again as he continues to make an impact on Houston, 2-1 winners over the Giants on Wednesday. He homered to provide the ultimate game-winning hit a day after his two-run homer forced extra innings. All told, the rook went 4-for-4 and swiped a base tonight, making him 7-for-7 in this series as Houston has finally got to its arch nemesis San Francisco, winning a series at home against the Giants for the first time since 1999. Pence, just called up at the end of April, has four homers, 15 RBI and a .355 BA. He's here to stay and has to be owned in whatever format you play in. USA TODAY.

Two questions. Who was that hansome guy on the Content Panel from Duluth, GA who touted Pence as a sleeper for the magazine? And, if that guy is so damn smart, how come Pence is not on any of his teams and how come he is waddling along somewhere near the middle of the pack? Ok..three questions.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I drafted Pence and Wood...dropped wood, kept pence, and now we are making a mad charge to first place in $1250 Auction League(1.5 points out)...

late round "bargains", if showed patience and kept on the bench, can win leagues....the problem is being able to keep these guys on reserves without dropping them because they are in AAA....

I felt holding onto these top possible callups also could be the key later in the season. It is much easier to draft and hold then to figure out how much to bid. I drafted Pence, Wood and Bailey. Then waived Wood after someone else waived Braun and paid a small amount for him. Hopefully this all works out.

The problem I have had with the sleepers is trying to hold them when the injuries strike. I had drafted Owens for example, but had to drop when I had 6 people on the DL early. Suffice to say, I didn't have Owens when it counted

Unfortunately I was the one who had to drop Braun when I was hit with injuries which allowed you to pick him up. I think he will have a big impact for you in the near future as he is supposed to be playing again at AAA soon. Like has been said before, AAA sleepers are great if you can hold them on your reserve list but injuries make it tough since there is a limited number of reserves and no DL. It makes the league good as you have to make some tough calls throughout the season. By the way, my other big sleeper was Piazza who is now out 4-6 weeks. No wonder I am stuck in the bottom 3rd of my league so far...
