I can understand this deal a lot more from the Cardinals side than the Jays.

Glaus will give Pujols better protection and has a year less on his contract.

Rolen will give the Jays a better defensive 3b, but for how long? Rolen on artificial turf just doesen't make sense and their DH is locked up with Thomas.

Maybe this is just a case of these two teams being tired of carrying each of these players and hoping their new player plays like the days of old?

Rolen/Thomas makes as much sense as Glaus/Thomas -- never understood that one. I also think Glaus has the type of injury (plantar fascitis) that's ALWAYS going to be a problem on turf.



The trade makes sense on a few levels:



Cardinals

(1) trade a bad three-year contract for a bad two-year contract. There's money going the other way, but still some savings from this deal



(2) Rolen vs. LaRussa -- problem solved



(3) Glaus adds power potential to a pretty weak lineup



Blue Jays

(1) if both Glaus and Rolen are healthy, Rolen's the better all-around player



(2) Glaus is pathetic against righties. Rolen's presence in the lineup should provide more consistent production from the other hitters





Bottom line is that both teams got the best deal they could for two players that nobody else wanted.

glaus- i think the lefty/ righty thing was really in toronto. before that i think it was almost even. could be wrong- just my recollection.

Who knows if what you read is true, but I heard the Cards insisted Glaus take the option for the 2nd year. If so why? I would want to be out from under that contract asap.



Overall the trade probably will not work out for either side but it is probably better than status quo.

Lowell and Beltre are the only ones that haven't been affected much. Chipper and A Ramirez always seem to miss time each season. ARod, Wright, Atkins, Cabrera, and others have four years or less at the position.

Then we get Blalock, Crede, Chavez, Tracy, Rolen, Glaus, and others. Any thoughts?

Glaus peaked at age 23 (with Anaheim in 2000) -- never has come close to replicating that 1.008 OPS season. His splits were always pro-lefty, but have gotten significantly worse in recent years.

sounds like the new gm in st louis is cleaning up old problems and starting over. probably not a bad way to go. i would almost bet both these guys don't pass their physicals.

The better ones (not the ole's)must PRACTICE the pivot and dive right or left from a STANDING postion. The other positions(other than C of course) don't require the constant pounding. Stand stand stand, "crack" dive (left or right), nab ball launch self back upright and laser the ball across the diamond. It's gotta add up. Good question.

So, we get into spring training games and Rolen is unexpectedly held out of a game. Ricciardi tells reporters in the post game conference that Rolen has "tweeked" his back, it is nothing major, if it had been the regular season he would have played, and it is good to get him just a little rest to keep him fresh.



What do you do?

plan on drafting braun, cabrerra, zimmerman- then, no worries

Rolen still has the best home run trot in the Bigs...Ricciardi reminds me of the same guy that said, "He hates these cans! Stay away from the cans!"

I'd take Glaus with plantar fasciatis and brokenlegitis over Rolen.



Doesn't make sense to me for Toronto. I try to read between the lines on trades but this one is tough to figure.



You might as well stick concrete around third base, Rolen won't hold up.



The most amazing thing about this trade was the fact they both passed their physicals. I would think Bo Jackson would pass a physical before these clowns.



Side note: I have plantar fantasytas and it hurts real bad until I draft.

A healthy Rolen makes absolute sense for Toronto. In my opinion, he has as much power as Glaus and going into 2005, he could be counted on for a .280 - .300 BA. Those skills are still there.



The problem is, of course "a healthy Rolen". If they use him right, he could put up Chipper Jones type numbers (maybe not quite the BA) in 425-450 AB's.
