Why did he go so high this year?
Rangers option C-1B Saltalamacchia
So far I have avoided the Salty one, but still have a Sat tonight. Think he might slip a few rounds being sent down?
Reasons to draft him after 10th round.
1) Traded for Mark Teixeria. (Texas must really like him)
2) Seven HR's in under 50 games in Texas.(My projection 15 in 2008)
3) Dual positional, Catcher eligible while playing 1B is a huge plus. (My projection 110 games)
4) Hit over .300 a couple times in minors. (My projection .270)
5) Showed power in minors (My projection 1 HR/26 AB)
6) More upside then most of those still on the board. (My projection 60 runs 61 RBI)

FUDD Lets see at the end of the season. I think Salty will produce atleast .275/15hr 50r/65rbi which would easily justify his being drafted....

Without reading the how and why he was sent down, I would guesstimate that they want him to be playing 1b everyday. Teagarden is their future catcher. So rather than have him getting part time ab's at 1b and maybe dh, they can send him down to work on 1b and get as many ab's as possible.
Or, I'm completely wrong and he had a bad spring.

6) More upside then most of those still on the board. (My projection 60 runs 61 RBI) Reasons not to draft him at all-
1. Hard to get numbers from the minors
2. Mismanaged from the start by the Rangers
3. Never an encouraging word from his manager
4. Outplayed in spring training by Laird
5. By September, Texas will have interest in Teagarden not Saltalamacchia
6 The Rangers won't keep both unless Salty hits like a 1b.

I think Tex will feel compelled to run him out there in either the 1b or DH spot full time after either ineffectiveness (Byrd/Broussard) or injuries(Bradley /Catalanotto/Hamilton) hit the lineup because he was such a big part of the Teix trade. I dont have him anywhere because he WAS being drafted to high but i WILL be snapping him off the waiver wire

DH at bats open up due to Bradley eventually going to a corner, Broussard is not exactly Pujols, and in the end Texas wants to trade Gerald Laird. Some catcher for a contender will get hurt.
I think it is obvious the people who spent a top 12 round pick on him are going to be hating life. I personally bid him to I think 4 bucks in the Vegas 650 auction and got him. Sure I was bidding him up and got caught, but he is worth a roster spot for a good long while.
My main concern for him is his swing is a little long left handed and when John Schuerholz cuts bait on you he is usually correct. Marte, Betemit, Luis Rivera, Bruce Chen just to name a few.

I am going to agree with Chest here. Teagarden has time and I think Laird surprised the Rangers a bit. Let him play, if he stays hot, trade for relative "top" value, and bring up Salty.
But not at first. That was an experiment that did not go well, in my opinion. The Braves were in dire straights and Texas was out of it by the time Salty kept the spot warm.
BTW, a good year for Salty will be .270 with 15 HR, 50 RBI's and 50 R in about 425 AB. I do not think he will ever get Texas to forget Pudge.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

What a nice value pick Gerald Laird has become .A starting catcher who can hit with a kittle pop in the 20th round.A few teams stole him very late, i even think he went 30th in a couple leagues.

They have attempted to give Laird the job in the past.He seems to earn the job,and then stop hitting.

Sometimes you must think about the organization in relations to the player. Salty is fine, the Rangers are not.
Empty your mind...thats it...more....more... ok completely empty. Now you are at executive baseball frame of mind!
At this level of mind you do NOT keep the two best players or hottest players. No we're thinking, first we need experience, that would be Laird, it doesen't matter what tools that come with the experience(re Kendall, Zaun, Barajas, LoDuca, the list goes on...)We keep Laird.
Now instead of thinking how good Salty can be, or how we've not given him a chance, think, what has this kid done for us? The answer would be nothing, he's done nothing for us! We have Teagarden on the way and this guy is dead weight! I can't wait for July when we can ship his ass to a contender with an injured catcher for a middle reliever. Brilliant!
And there it is. MLB management 101.

You, of course, are probably right, but hope springs eternal for a sign of life within MLB senior management. What would Terry Mann say?
