WASHINGTON -- The Nationals placed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list on Monday because of a slightly torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Zimmerman hurt his shoulder while sliding headfirst against the Orioles on May 18. He continued to play with the problem until May 25 against the Brewers. Zimmerman would then miss the next seven games.
Zimmerman took batting practice on Saturday in Phoenix and still felt pain in the shoulder. In the first two rounds of the session, Zimmerman was taking soft swings. By the fifth round, he was swinging the bat harder, hitting a ball over the fence.
Dr. Benjamin Shaffer, Washington's orthopedist, advocated rest and anti-inflammatory medications for Zimmerman. However, the Nationals are consulting with Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., Reds orthopedist Dr. Timothy Kremchek and Dr. Robert Cofield of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to determine if surgery is necessary.
