ufs, your post was very poorly worded to make your point. You change from the players in the header to RSN, on which you make your final point on. which doesn't make sense given your header... please reread and I am sure you will agree

At least Pedroia is a deserving all star. Does Jeter and Fukudome deserve to even be in the game? Are those fans a disgrace too?

Presuming that the players vote for one player at each position (other than the one selected by the fans), the players chose Jason Varitek. On the surface that looks ugly since Varitek's recent slump has put his average into Mendoza line territory. But when you look at the AL catching landscape, there's very little to choose from. The fans correctly voted for Joe Mauer. Victor Martinez is on the DL. Established catchers Kenji Johjima and Ramon Hernandez are having poor years. Jorge Posada spent much of the first half of this season on the DL; Jose Molina actually has more AB's than Posada. I suspect the players want to see more from Dioner Navarro before recognizing him as an all-star. It looks to me like this came down to Jason Varitek vs. AJ Pierzynski. Varitek is well-respected around baseball for his leadership and catching ability. Pierzynski, who has much better batting credentials than Varitek, is an unpopular player amongst his peers. Ergo, Varitek got the nod.

Kevin Ramon Hernandez, AJ Pierzynski, and M.Olivo all have better stats. You could even argue Napoli has better stats.

Kevin Exactly. It would be more appropriate to pick on the fans, or better yet the system that pushes all the big market players into the game. Jeter will be the biggest joke there. He should be embarrassed to even show up.

I might slightly disagree about Hernandez though. His first four weeks were past bad, but since Week 5, Hernandez has hit .272. And in the last four weeks, he has hit .300 with 11 Runs, 3 HR, and 13 RBI, so he has heated up quite a bit and is actually contributing.

I drafted JR Towles (16) and Ramon Castro (30). Castro was a throwaway in the final round, but guys like Michael Barrett and Yorvit Torrealba have been awful as replacements. I have managed to upgrade with the aforementioned Ramon Hernandez, Kelly Shoppach and Jeff Clement, but it's still been ugly!

*Slumped to start 2007.

*Fist fight with a teammate.

*Bad PR for fight, even though the ever-placid Zambrano started it.

*Relegated to back-up duty.

*Traded to Petco.

*Never played enough to get back on track, even though the regular Padres catchers are beyond bad.

*Fouled ball off face, leading to multiple fractures.



Good gosh! If you see him, don't stand too close.

And I might add that is after a string of good luck that includes:



*A super-hot streak.

*Good PR for a fight with Pierzynski (since no one likes him).

*Love letters from Ron Shandler.
