I know that if I posted my draft list someone would say Dave, did you smoke the drapes before picking this guy? But,Shandler had a couple of picks that really stood out to me.
Joba Chamberlain as the third pick of the second round in a fifteen team draft? The first starting pitcher taken? He may not start,if he does start they will limit his innings.WOW !!!
Russell Martin in the 14th round.Need I say more.I found many more that I found strange. But,these two really leapt off of the page.

Because I question why you would make the observation about Martin - the listed "rotisserie snake draft" that is taken from from two of the weakest pages in a 260+ page book and historically is nothing more than players listed in descending dollar value (based on December projections when playing time can't really be fine tuned).....there are NO real life drafts that would go that way.
The Joba pick is based on their presumption that he would be in the rotation for the entire year and that his strikeout rate would translate into 230+K in almost 200 IP. That is certainly debatable....even in New York

Another section is for the auction value listing. The Roto snake draft page is not in dollar value order.I do not know how a roto snake draft listed by rounds can be looked at as anything but a roto snake draft listed by rounds.
I do remember last years book.I also remember when Mr.Shandler appeared on the message board to hear questions like these. He said "I will have to get with my people about that."

"No matter how you cut it 550 AB is a TON of playing time for a demanding position like CA. Workload may have caught up to him in 2nd half: xBA (.256) PX (62) hr/f (7%) all took a hit" - Baseball Forecaster 2009 writeup on Russell Martin.
If you reduce his Plate Appearences and prorate his 13 (2008) homeruns and 69 RBI over 15% less AB's along with xBA the only real difference between him and Kurt Suzuki (26th rounder according to same Shandler list) is the 10 SB.
That being said Shandler doesn't IMO give enough value to the premuim between the Replacement Players at CA vs other offensive positions. If Russell Martin were an OF, in what round would you draft him?

Thats the thing with Martin. At a tough position to fill he is going to get many more AB's compared to other catchers. Those AB's come with a good batting average.Which make the average even more productive.Throw in the stolen bases from the catcher position and it all adds up to a much higher then 14th round pick.I can see your point of overlooking his position and the pick comes in line. But,since when do we overlook the position?

I have always read this section to be Forecaster "value" of a player to a 15-team serpintine draft (as opposed to auction value), not projected draft position. The ADP will, inevitably, be much different than what is seen there.
As I understand it, Ron has always been a proponent of or expressed the opinion that since, as a whole, catchers will produce less for your team than any other position and are among the riskiest players in the game, do not place the kind of draft emphasis on them in the earlier rounds as you would other players who, in total, will net your team greater rewards.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
