IMO, that makes him up and coming and necessarily unproven. people taking him in the second round are assuming he's going to duplicate or improve on his best year ever. IMO Look - I'm not saying that he will outproduce - but when you follow up a ROY with an MVP and play for the one of the Top teams in baseball - you have alot going for you. Let's just assume that Ellsbury takes a step forward and the Sox sign Texeira - which I think they will - how do you like Pedroia then? And it is all about scarcity when it comes to 2B.
The Red Sox are among the top three in runs scored every year. They could sign Tony Gwyn and Babe Ruth in their prime and the improvement over who they were batting at the top of their order is still going to be marginal. You're not going to get an extra 20 runs because you have Ortiz, Tex, instead of Ortiz, Youk. On the contrary, if his BA/OBP regresses as it is likely to, he will only score less. Anyway, just assuming that the Red Sox will sign Tex shows your optimism and team loyalties pretty clearly. There is no great reason to think that will happen.

And I assume nothing - I just said I think that they will sign Tex. All reports that I have read say that he is their top target. It could just be a game to get the Yankees to spend more money -and let's not forget that Scott Boras is involved here- but I think Theo is getting close to closing a deal. Shawn what is the word in Boston???
Fox Sports
Yahoo Sports Also - I don't really want to argue the merits of Pedroia, a guy I most likely will not draft this year, but what do you base the assumption that his BA/OBP will regress on. The guy makes contact over 90% of the time - he puts the ball in play - and his OBP has been .374 two years straight. Where's he going to regress to .310 instead of .326?

All the reports I read said that the Red Sox have a first baseman.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Yep, I would do it. Youk (R), Ortiz (L), Tex (B) at 3-4-5 would be killer, in both fantasy and real-world.

Lowell is an outstanding defender and a good offensive player. If I'm going to spend 20 million per on a guy, it is going to be someone who can improve my team as much as possible, which means replacing a poor player. I guess it would all make sense if they get Tex or Lowe and then send a current player packing to Texas so they can attain a catcher because a good catcher over Varitek is worth a lot more than Tex over Lowell.

I know they have Bay pretty cheap, but I thought they would resign him early. As for Teixeira, do you really think he wants to play in Baltimore or Washington? It could be years before they contend. I see Teixeira signing with Boston or the Angels.

mock draft #3?
I don't think we can/should wait on Tradesman any longer, so I will post the PM pick from LTD - unless he posts first and then mine and we will move along - Tradesman can post his pick if he shows before next turn - if not I will look for someone to takeover his team.

All the reports I read said that the Red Sox have a first baseman. And a pretty good one. I love the Boston management but I don't understand going after Tex other than to keep him away from a competing team.
Tex at first, Youk at third and let old "One-Ball" Lowell slip away? Yep, I would do it. Youk (R), Ortiz (L), Tex (B) at 3-4-5 would be killer, in both fantasy and real-world.
Let's not forget the hip surgery that Lowell just undertook - he's still a clubhouse guy - so the Sox could move him to a team looking for a stopgap at 3B.
Teams are lining up for an older, expensive, stopgap 3b coming off surgery.

Sorry Dave - I thought you knew who those two were - especially since one was your pick

Sure. Why not? That's still a 16 point drop in BA if you were expecting last years stats. Players in general are likely to regress closer to the mean when jumping in BA. It is just tough for most players to maintain that level of BA. Think of the players who hit over .300 in 2007 and see how many improved in 2008. Pedroia was one, but that was an exception. I expect him to follow the rule this year. Also, he is not getting the extra flyballs that go out of the park like some of the Pujols-like power hitters who go for a high average. If he hits less homers as many expect, it will have some BA effect as well.

Especially having to give up prospects in return. Florida had a heckuva time dealing Lowell when he was healthy and younger, Boston would find dealing him even more difficult.
