Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

[/QUOTE]....or I'm playing with the upcoming seasons stats...200+K's, ERA 3.50, WHIP 1.07, 16 wins...these stats actually merit a selection higher than the 7th .
Shields is one of the better pitchers in baseball. If he played in a big market, he would be getting a lot more love than he does playing in the dungeon down here.

BTW, Shields could easily have an ERA in the high 2's.....3.50 is probably to high.

I like Shields. Like everyone else, he was one of my "sleepers"
last year.
His age, arm and experience level (52 career starts) are all positive (wish the Bravos had him). Shields pitched generally well all year especially if you discount that one 10 ER start vs the NYY. Absent that start, his road and home records (ERA, WHIP, K) are great. Can't predict wins especially in TB, but barring injury he is going to be a top ten round pick for years.
I do have concerns. He pitched a lot of innings the last two years (Minors and Majors '06 186.0 IP, and 215.0 IP) after only pitching 115 or so the year before. It would not be unusual to have a dead arm period in '08. Also, TB may of protected him a bit last year. Of his 31 starts, 11 were against ANA, KC, MIN, FLA, and BLT (5!) in which he only gave up more than 4 ER once and made it through the 7th in all but two. He did pitch well enough (NYY notwithstanding) against the others, but did give up 5 or more ER in 25% of those remaining 20 games and couldn't make through the 7th in 8 of them.
No big surprise, Wayne, he pitched better against the weaker sisters, but if he assumes his rightful place at the top of the staff with Kazmir, his stats could suffer (ERA and WHIP).
Just thoughts. I am very high on him and would still take him, if not my #1 pitcher then a very strong #2.

I like you Patrick- I hope you change your homer ways or prove me wrong in 2008. That is unless I switch back to Orlando.
Wayne- I will say it for the 100th time- I learn from you every year and you finish bottom of the pack every year. It has to change this year- I am the first to call it Wayne Edwards finishes top 25 in the nfbc in 2008.
