Im at a loss on the Napoli Iwamura picks. Not trying to be critical...just to understand...maybe I need to redo my own thinking Napoli periperals suggest his Avg is really a 245, he wont play full time. If Vegas were to give odds on 20 hr again...I think they would be high. Iwamura really only helps in runs. What am I missing?

I think you are missing the obvious upside in a guy that hit 20 hrs in only 227 AB's. If he can manage to get 400 AB's - I think the upside is 30hr's here.

And I think a .270 avg, while optimistic, is doable.

Add in the fact that he will likely chip in 5-10 sb's and is entering his Age 27 year - I'll roll the dice that he takes another step forward.

The biggest risk with Napoli, IMO, is if he can remain healthy,and the offseason shoulder surgery is a concern.

For comparison, he went Round 9.2 in our recent NFBC Champions draft - so that's even more optimistic.

Yes, 15 team league with same drafting parameters and setup as NFBC (we are in round 25 now and there are two teams that need their second catchers and one team that still needs BOTH of his catchers.....not a strategy I am fond of, but there is usually one person in each league who tries it out)

By drafting a catcher later (after round 25):

1) You can have this view (Or similar worthless projection on every catcher still on the board):

"His periperals suggest his Avg is really a 245, he wont play full time. If Vegas were to give odds on 20 hr again...I think they would be high."

2) Get this result:

"He can manage to get 400 AB's - the upside is 30hr's here. a .270 avg, while optimistic, is doable. He will likely chip in 5-10 sb's and is entering his Age 27 year - He takes another step forward."

3) and be very Happy.

While if you have the .270, 30 HR/5-10 steals view and take him in round 9 and get the .245 20/3 you will be unhappy

(and a little closer to out of the money).

To solve the catcher dilemna in an equanimous fashion, of the top five teams last yr, two seemingly went strong on cathcers in draft, two have clear pick up type guys and one went one and one...a perfect split and support for either argument...

Yes, but relying on being able to acquire a catcher in free agency is dangerous.. who knows if there will even be any that come up that are going to have good value that weren't drafted... and if so, maybe only 1 or 2... and then you have to be the high bidder on them... catchers and closers will cost you the most in free agency usually. Remember, more catchers are drafted proportionally than any other position... 30 catchers get drafted.. there are only 30 teams in the MLB, and not every team has just ONE starter.. so people are going to be drafting part-time catchers.. what does that leave left in free agency?? Answer: NOTHING.

Catching is something of a catch 22. I'm in the camp that feels that you have to address it sooner rather than later. BUT, you also have to hit on the guys you pick, otherwise you "wasted" a high pick.

I drafted Johjima and Pudge last year and felt good leaving the draft. Oops. That said, I was able to pick up Shoppach to minimize the damage somewhat.

What was my point again? Oh yeah, there should only be 1 C spot on the roster:P

DEFINITELY agree on that. It seems silly to me to require 2 catchers... every other position has STARTERS that don't get drafted, why do we need to draft guys who will be part-time catchers at best?? But yeah, you're right about needing to hit on those catchers you take early.. I took Victor in the 2nd round last year... destroyed me. I picked up Shoppach also, which helped somewhat, but I couldn't replace what I thought Victor was going to give me.. ie: .300 BA with 25 HR 100 RBI 90 R or something along those lines...
