Greg -Important Point Brought out in Mock Draft!

Post by Nevadaman » Thu Feb 12, 2004 8:24 pm

Greg, I meant to comment on this right after the draft and got sidetracked. Anyway, there were several teams that did not follow the rules. One had only 8 pitchers. One had only 1 catcher, etc. I think it might be good to comment on this. What if that happens in the real draft? What exact penalties are assessed on "illegal" teams?

Greg -Important Point Brought out in Mock Draft!

That is a good point and I'll address it now. In the NFBC draft, we are going 29 rounds and you don't actually have to fill your 23 starting roster spots during the first 23 rounds. In other words, if you want to draft 8 outfielders during your first 23 picks and want to fill your second catcher in the 29th round, that's legal. But in the end, you MUST have the required positions filled and if you don't have two catchers in your lineup or you only have eight pitchers in your lineup when you submit your Week 1 lineup, your lineup will be illegal and thus won't accumulate stats.

It's possible that someone will leave the draft with not enough required players at a certain position and when we enter the rosters we will then let that owner know that he must drop one player and pick up a free agent before Opening Day to make his roster legal. Remember, we are drafting two weeks before Opening Day and there will be one FAAB acquisition period the weekend before Opening Day, so there will be enough time for someone to make their lineup legal.

We will tell all of our draft facilitators to watch this, but it really isn't their job to make sure everyone has the 23 required positions filled with each team's 29 picks. That's each team's responsibility and obviously I'll check every one once the drafts are finished. Good point and thanks for the heads up.

Slight correction Greg.

You are drafting just ONE weeks before games begin. Don't forget those two NYY-TB games in Japan on March 30 & 31. Teams with illegal rosters will have to correct that problem immediately assuming they have any Yankees or Devil Rays on their teams.

Of course, the timing issue for FA acquisitions is one you are currently working on.

You are correct and we'll address that series as we get closer to the draft. Obviously you'll have to have your lineup in place before those games are held and then our first free agent acquisition period will take place after that. There's always a hurdle in the road, right? We'll get it all figured out.
