Eugene Lam Is Week 18 Online Championship Winner
Eugene Lam made sure to get his pitchers in the Online Championship this year. That strategy has paid dividends throughout the season so far and last week, it struck gold.
Thanks to some strong pitching, Lam’s team led the way in the Online Championship last week with 4,991.5 points.
Ryan Zimmerman (.522-4-7-0-10), Pablo Sandoval (.458-1-5), Kelly Shoppach (.364-2-4) and Asdrubal Cabrera (.435-0-3-4) led the way at the plate. Josh Johnson, Andy Pettitte and Jered Weaver combined for three wins and 36 strikeouts and Ryan Franklin had two saves to lead the pitching staff.
“My pitching was stellar as has been the case for much of the season,” Lam said. “I did my best job of drafting pitchers late in the draft.
“My (Draft Day) strategy was to go for offense early and get as many solid strikeout pitchers as I could in Rounds 10-20. The main reason I have done well has been the performance of my late-round picks. Weaver, Jimenez, Floyd, Jackson and Franklin have carried my team throughout the season.
“The back-to-back picks of Edwin Jackson and Ryan Franklin in the 27th and 28th (rounds) along with Aaron Hill in the 21st ,Sandoval in the 15th and Hawpe in the 13th have been the key to my success so far this year.”
Lam also has a simple strategy when it comes to working FAAB during the season.
“If you really want a player, it’s best to overpay for that player,” he said. “I guess I’ve been lucky in that I believe I have yet to be outbid on a player I have pursued.”
Good work in the draft and on the Waiver Wire has enabled Lam to enjoy a much sweet 2009 NFBC season than what transpired a year ago.
“I played in a satellite league last year and finished dead last,” he said. “I entered this year on a whim and out of the five teams I have drafted this season, this is my greatest success. Hopefully, I can keep this going but my track record when I have been in the lead makes me a bit wary.”
The 36-year-old Lam is single and lives in Forest Hills, NY. He is a tax manager.
