We judge each contract as players are signed by teams. We determine what is a good signing and bad signing by the money and years of play for that money. It's never as clear as Albert Pujols getting 254 million dollars for 10 years of work.We're not privy to all the facts. Inside these contracts are bonuses for incentives and goals reached and deferred money. Some, are a combination of both.
For example, an option in Ryan Brauns contract calls for five million dollars in bonuses should incentives be reached. This bonus money is also deferred. The effect of this is to lessen the Brewers payroll burden now and mess with it a long time from now. GM's love deferred money, knowing that the money paid later, will be another GM's problem.
Ryan Braun will be paid until the year 2031. And it won't be drips and drabs, it'll be substantial money, even counting inflation.

Remember Bobby Bonilla?
Bonilla was a talented player, but his head was similar to Carlos Zambrano. Fiery, an uncertain personality, and expensive.
Bonilla just this year started receiving deferred payments from the team in baseball that can least afford to pay him. The New York Mets.
The same Mets who have taken 25 and 40 million dollar loans during the last few months.
The Mets began paying Bonilla 1.19 million dollars for the next 25 years in connection to a buyout of his contract in 2000 when he was owed 5.9 million dollars. Deferred till this year.
Bonilla will be on the Mets books till 2036.

One another "pay-it-forward" note, since the winning bid for Yu Darvish tops reportedly tops the record $51.1 million posting fee that the Red Sox paid the Seibu Lions for Daisuke Matsuzaka, I was wondering if the money Seibu (and other Japanese teams posting their star players) received actually benefited their organizations (i.e. did the money get put to work to improve the team or was it just a cash out)?

Has anyone ever done a study on this?
