Rant alert.....
Sometimes, all it takes is one sentence
And this sentence wasn't a mistake or typographical error.
It wasn't a misprint of a headline like:
Billy Wilson, The Rapist, Arrested
When it should have read:
Billy Wilson, Therapist, Arrested
Nope, this was a conscious sentence that pissed me off.
Major League Managers get paid millions to be smart. When it comes to their team, they're not supposed to miss a trick.
If new to a team, the Manager is expected to meet with each player to get to know them as a person before seeing their attributes on the field.
With all this said, Ozzie Guillen said that he may hit Omar Infante second vs. left handers. That statement itself is in question as I'll point out later. But, it's the reason he made that statement that has me seeing red.
Guillen did not know that Emilio Bonifacio was a switch hitter. His son had to tell him. Any fantasy manager worth his salt could have told him. A magazine could have told him. Club notes that he's probably supposed to read could have told him. A meeting with Bonifacio could have told him.
This is a guy who should know every nuance of his team.I know he's new, but he has had months to prepare.
There's no excuse.
But, that isn't all. The fact is, that Guillen put his Managerial 'skills' on auto pilot. He thought that Bonifacio only hit left handed. Still, Bonifacio hits left handers a lot better than righties. Something else that Guillen should know. He should also know that over the last three years, Infante hits right handers a bit better than lefties.
Not only does Guillen not know that, but he was willing without this information, to make his team a little more vulnerable because he didn't do his homework. He was willing to stand by a managers trusted righty-lefty matchups without putting any thought into it to see if it is viable. Dumb ass.
As fantasy players, we try to process every bit of information in order to make our teams better. We don't get paid for it. We do it for pride, for a job well done. We process up to 1000 players, not the 60 that are in our spring training camp.
And here is a guy making millions who obviously missed a piece of information that has a direct impact to his own team.
A piece of information concerning a player who could be an integral part of the Marlins team this year.
The only team he has to worry about.
It makes me wonder how many other managers phone in the lefty-righty matchup. It doesn't take much to see if it is the right call. One hired nerd can tell a Manager the odds of each matchup, if like Guillen, they are too busy tweeting to actually see if a strategy should work.
Thankfully, Guillen managed in Chicago, so he does know that Carlos Zambrano can hit.
Unfortunately, cruise control maybe the mode for Gillen and a pinch hitter beyond the sixth inning could be automatic.
Ok, I feel better. Thanks for the listen.
Time to watch a reality cooking show.
I'm guessing these chefs will know all their ingredients.
