Defending Geekdom

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Apr 05, 2012 6:40 am

I'm pissed.
I ran into a fella at the ball park last night, who put down fantasy baseball. I'm used to the sly put downs, the rolls of the eyes, and the "Oh, is that what you like?" after explaining the interest to some people.
This guy somehow felt superior because he was a "True fan" of one team rather than a geek looking for statistics.

So, not wanting to disappoint the folks around me, who made an audible shreek in my head, I let him have it.
I asked him why blindly rooting for anybody wearing the same uniform top made him more of a fan than somebody who makes informed decisions before becoming a fan of that player.
I told him I drafted Tulo in a draft with my first choice, who was more upset about the possibility of him being hurt and out for a long time?
I asked him who Kenley Jansen was. He didn't know.
I told him I did and I knew that if he's coming into the game against the Rox, that the odds are, the Rox will be shut down.
And, if you were such a big fan of the Rox, SHOULDN'T YOU KNOW THAT?

I asked him who the Rox third baseman will be next year. He didn't know.
I told him if you were a true fan, you'd know your minor league system and who will be the Rockies next star.
I know! And somehow you belittle me a little because of your shortcomings in supporting the very team that is so close to you?
Blindly following a team is better than keeping track of every player in the majors!
What is that?!
Somehow, you feel superior because you fork over a couple of hundred bucks to watch a random game 'live' and follow a team that you really have no clue about?
Who's the geek here?

I took a breath.
And the guy smiled.
Others started to laugh.
I'd been punked.
I hate getting punked!
They all told me to have a nice 'Opening Day' tomorrow and to enjoy my geekdom.

And I wish the same to all of you....

I liked this one a lot Dan!
The one that makes me the most mad, is when somebody who doesn't understand our hobby or baseball in general say, "Oh, like Fantasy Football, but with Baseball!" Sorry, I don't do fantasy football and I wouldn't consider them anything alike for 1,000 obvious reasons. I could go through them all, but since you are "one of those Geeks" like me Dough, I won't bore you to death!
My response to people trying to change my baseball loyalties.
