Numerish Slang

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Oct 29, 2012 2:49 pm

I'm about as big of a baseball geek as their is, but Ia still don't speak Numerish.
I've tried to put meaning in those numbers that Shandlerites have faith in, but I just can't.
When somebody says WAR to me, I think Civil or Vietnam, not Wins Above Replacement.

'Splits' are sort of like pig latin to those fluent in Numerish. I love splits.
Splits may not help as much in draft preparation but I find them a whole lot more fun.
Numerish is above my pay grade. It's a language for the smart.
Soon, the Numerish will start coming out with their books and sites to dazzle us with why Curtis Granderson stopped running and took a big hit to his batting average.
Until then, we have splits.....or stats...or Numerish slang
Here are a few unusual ones....

Tony Campana had 30 stolen bases....And only five rbi

Mike Trout only hit .267 vs. left handers....346 vs righties

Trout also had six homers, 17 rbi, and 21 runs vs. one team.......The Texas Rangers

Think Bonifacio will be a good 'sneaky' pick this year?
Maybe not.
Bonifacio only qualifies as an outfielder.
And this split......30 stolen bases.....30 runs scored....Maybe Judy or Emily Bonifacio....

How could this be?
Michael Bourn reached first base 100 more times than Rajai Davis.....And had four less steals...
Somebody got lazy

Small Ball is Overrated.
In 398 at bats, Everth Cabrera hit near the top of the lineup and stole 44 bases, scoring just 49 runs.
In 396 at bats, Wilin Rosario hit near the middle or bottom of the lineup, 28 hr's and scoring 64 runs.

Much is made about Adam Dunn's strike outs.
Let's look at it a different way.
Dunn had 222 strike outs. Nobody else had even 200.
Sounds bad.
Dunn averaged a homer per every five k's.
Danny Espinoza averaged a homer every 11 k's
Carlos Pena, a homer every 10 k's
Our friend, Lazy Michael Bourn who did end up 15th in k's, a stat meant for the free swinger, averaged a homer every 17 k's.
I can live with Dunn's K's...

Dunn strikes out twice as much as he walks.
Espinoza strikes out four times per walk.
So does Drew Stubbs.
And Chris Davis is closer to five k's per walk.

Triples are considered a speed category, more than a power category.
To back this up, every hitter with double digit triples had double digit stolen bases....except one.
Tyler Colvin had 10 triples, only seven stolen bases.

For years, folks have been saying that Billy Butlers home runs will turn to homers.
Last year, they did.
But, in Royal-like fashion, Alex Gordon took Butler's place, leading MLB in doubles while his home run production dropped from 23 to 14.
Although many think of Gordon as a power hitter, he has only hit more than 16 home runs in a season one time.

Much was made that Jose Altuve had a great year last year.
A judy in disguise ?
Here are the Revere'd numbers for Altuve- .290/80/7/37/33
Here are the numbers for Michael Young, a player coming off arguably his worst year in a decade- .277/79/8/67/2
In a recent draft, Altuve went in the ninth round.
Young in the 16th...

12 players scored over 100 runs last year.
Not one of those players finished in the top 10 in bases on balls.
Walks, unless given to a speed guy with the bases empty are a bad thing in roto baseball.
They just are.
Take your dog for a walk. Both he and you will get more out of it.

Walking good hitters works very well ...
Take Joey Votto, he walked 94 times.....and only scored 59 runs, 14 of which were on his own home runs.

Adam Dunn knocked himself in with homers 41 times.
He walked 105 times and had 69 other hits while batting in front of Konerko, Rios, and Pierzynski.
Dunn scored only 46 other times.

Over the last four years, Carlos Lee has had more walks than strike outs.
Over the last four years, Carlos Lee had less home runs than at any other time in his career.

Trevor Plouffe had 24 homers.
11 in June.
Never hit more than four in any other month.

Ryan Ludwick had 55 extra base hits. 26 homers.
He also singled 61 times and walked 42 times.
He scored....... 53 times.
Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.

For those that say 'Speed never slumps', say hello to Drew Stubbs....
Stubbs bunted well and had infield hits an hit .213
Stubbs last four years...
.267
.255
.243
.213
That's not a speed bump, that is a speed slumps...
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
