I'm in an e/mail draft. It's my fourth e/mail draft. I love these.
I enjoy the fact that there is not a default list of players in front of us. It puts everybody on an even keel.
The default list has been around since before the internet.
It was needed by some newspapers who attached dollar values to players.
Then, when the internet did come around, it was written in stone that every site must have a default.
The major reason for a default, is so that players names disappear after being drafted, preventing the drafting of the same player twice.
Something that happens in local and email drafts.
I've been guilty of this in this current e/mail draft.
In the 20th round, I drafted CJ Cron.
He was taken in the 13th.
No matter when a player is selected, I feel like such a bonehead for repeating a players name.
But, it does go with the territory.
Now, about CJ Cron being taken in the 13th round.
I have preached that if liking a player, DRAFT HIM.
But, like any game, we have to know when something is too early.
Drafting Cron in the 13th is like bringing in your lefty specialist to face Bryce Harper in the first inning.
Just like a Manager has to have faith in his Starting pitcher, we have to have faith that Cron will be there later.
Cron's adp is 282, which means that on average, he is being drafted near the end of the 19th round.
I do have a rule of thumb for drafting players that are coveted and super coveted.
If coveted in the first 10 rounds, I'll draft a player one round before his 'usual' draft spot.
Super coveted, two rounds before.
From rounds 11-20, I'll double the process.
If coveted, draft that player two rounds before the usual.
Super coveted, four rounds before.
And on down the line till getting to 50 in DC Drafts.
With this method, and even being super coveted, Cron was still taken too early.
May have been his Mom in the draft.
In that case, Junior HAS to be drafted at all and any costs!

Cron does have some added value if you own Pujols or another 1B/CI who may not be ready in April - Cron is likely to have full time at bats for at least the first month of the season - maybe more.
In that time your other player may come back and if not there will be hitter who win a job you can get in FAAB
Seems like in one email draft (not the one you are in Dan) someone snaked me on him - in the first reserve round
