A Slump

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Jun 21, 2016 9:40 am

RotoWorld-
'Trayce Thompson went 0-for-4 and struck out three times Monday against the Nationals.
Thompson is hitting just .212 over his last 30 games, though he does have five homers and 15 walks over that span. His decline is all BABIP, and there's nothing so far to suggest he's overmatched'

This one was a 100 mph fastball to my nads.
I hope it wasn't Dave that wrote this one.
This writer uses the walk to defend Trayce Thompson's slump. Not only does he use the walk, he infers that BABIP is at fault for Thompson's slump.
Why, with the advent of Numerish, can't a slump just be a slump?

Maybe the writer is right. Maybe Thompson is not overmatched. Good.
At the same time, he sounds like he has Thompson on all of his teams and wants to not only convince us that Thompson is not overmatched, but himself as well.
Almost as if self-debating in begging the Dodgers to not send him to the minors.
I like the term, 'slump'.
Slump does not infer that a hitter is overmatched.
The writer did that!
Thompson only made his major league debut last year. A slump is in the cards for a lot of hitters during their second year.
Quite the opposite. It intimates that the hitter is not himself now, but will be again soon.

This writer uses 15 base on balls as part of an argument that Thompson is not overmatched.
Why?
He may have a good eye still?
He's seeing the ball?
He's assumed to be having 'good at bats'?
Why did he not mention that Thompson has 24 strike outs over his last 24 games?
Before this stretch of 30 games and 15 walks, Thompson had six walks.
And hitting grandly.
LACK of walks are never a concern when one is hitting well.

I like Trayce Thompson. I have him on a lot of teams. I think he is going to be a fine player.
LET HIM SLUMP!
It happens.
15 walks in 30 games is completely and utterly meaningless.
My reckoning is that he is a powerful hitter with less powerful hitters behind him making him a target for free passes.
His power and quickly-built reputation before the slump, the mitigating factor in receiving some of those walks.
The walks are a positive for the writer to back up his slant that Thompson is not overmatched.
One that could have been defined as simply, a slump.

HA!
I've laid off Votto this year on purpose.
I sorta feel sorry for him.
His approach at the plate with two strikes for a power hitter is downright laughable.
He should swing like Billy Hamilton and Hamilton should swing like Votto.

HA!
Thanks for getting me outta my slump, Bryan!

'Joey Votto (flu) is out again Wednesday.
Votto came down with a stomach bug on Tuesday.'

I wouldn't wish a sickness or ailment for anybody.
Just as a joke or prank or something, just once I'd like to see this headline-

'Joey Votto is out again. He is suffering from the walking pneumonia.'
