Greg Morgan Is Week 13 Online Championship Winner
Greg Morgan and his father Dale approached their baseball drafts with a simple formula.
“Our approach was to go by the book or inside the box if you will,” Greg said. “We paid close attention to hitting our target totals for each category, tiers in which the talent level dropped off and making sure we didn’t miss out on a tier before it dropped out.”
But then, as Morgan said, all of that went straight out the window when the time came to dive into the Online Championship.
“It was our last NFBC draft of the year and we simply decided to have fun,” he said.
The good times have been plentiful so far and last week, they went through the roof as Morgan’s team topped the field in the Online Championship last week with 5,378.5 points.
Juan Pierre (.381, 5 SBs), Mark Reynolds (.280-3-7), Mike Cameron (.304-2-6) and Matt Wieters (.471-1-3) led the way offensively. Tim Lincecum, Dan Haren and Ricky Nolasco combined for six wins and 52 strikeouts while Mariano Rivera, Joe Nathan and Kevin Gregg combined for eight saves to lead the pitching staff.
“So many players we were extremely high on, we didn't get on most of our previous teams because we didn't want to overpay for them,” Morgan said. “This time, we at least got some of them. Adam Jones, Todd Helton, Matt Weiters and Tim Lincecum to name a few. At the same time, we felt that a number of pitchers were going later than they should have, so we built a strong pitching nucleus.
“This week in particular our pitching staff had a dynamite week, racking up the K's, Wins, and Saves. Couple that with a week of hot hitting and you'll always be near the top.”

Greg Morgan Is Week 13 Online Championship Winner
I remember this draft well because it was the last group that we had on the final Saturday before Opening Day. Tom and I were both exhausted and I took this one as one of the three Online Championships I was monitoring. Greg threw a curveball right off the bat and made many folks in that league mad with his SP run to open things up.
Greg drafted six pitchers with his first eight picks, including Tim Lincecum fifth overall. He was definitely having fun with this team and the results maybe are even surprising to him. But sometimes this is the way to go, completely with your heart.
Here were his first eight picks out of the 5th spot:
1. Tim Lincecum
2. B.J. Upton
3. Brian Roberts
4. Jake Peavy
5. Dan Haren
6. Joe Nathan
7. Mariano Rivera
8. Ricky Nolasco
Matt Wieters went in the 11th round. Very interesting.
