Stuff

Lets talk about 'Stuff' that, for the most part, does not include the batted ball...

Another record that'll never be broken-
Maury Wills played 165 games during his MVP year(It should have been Mays receiving the award) in 1962.
Nobody else has played in that many games....

Billy Williams actually outdid Wills though. He played in over 162 games, three times....

The 1965 Chicago Cubs had three players that played in more than 162 games...
Williams, Ron Santo, and Ernie Banks.

Cecil and Prince Fielder have both played 162 games in a season....

Since 1955, 50 times players have been intentionally walked more than 25 times in a season.
All of these players had more than 20 home runs except for six.
Hall of Famer, Stan Musial had 17 homers with a .336 avg in 1958
Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente had 18 homers with a .291 avg in 1968
Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn had 7 homers and batted .370 in 1987
Should be Hall of Famer, Tim Raines had 18 homers and a .330 avg in 1987
Soon to be Hall of Famer, Ichiro Suzuki had 8 homers with a .321 in 2002
And no way Hall of Famer Adolpho Phillips with 17 homers and a .268 avg in 1967.
The Cubs had a dangerous lineup. Phillips was a little like Drew Stubbs in that he could hit with power and run, but strike out a lot. The cubs hit him eighth, satisfied with the intentional walks so that pitchers would not lead off innings.

Barry Bonds set intentional walks records that'll probably stand forever. Including having seasons with more intentional walks than strike outs.
Before Bonds, in 1973, San Francisco Giant Dave Rader was intentionally walked 23 times.
He struck out only 22 times.

Although some players have done it multiple times, only five players in Major League history have struck out 190 times in a season.
Who were they?
Answers will be at the bottom of this post...

Chicks dig the long ball, modern players have gotten that....
98 times a players has had over 160 strike outs.
Before 1968........ONE player had more than 160 strike outs, Dave Nicholson had 175 strike outs in 1963.
Last year, 12 players had 160 strike outs....

George Sisler is a forgotten .400 hitter.
He did it twice. Once in 1920 and again in '22.
In '20, he hit .407 and set a Major League record with 257 hits, a record that would stand till Ichiro broke it more than 80 years later.
In '22, he hit for a .420 average.
Maybe even more impressive is that Sisler only struck out 14 times during that .420 year.
Nineteen times during his first .400 year....

In 1923, Babe Ruth was the closest player to hit .400 while striking out 100 times.
The Babe hit .393 and struck out 93 times....

The highest batting average with over 100 strike outs belongs to Alex Rodriguez in 1996. He hit .358 with 104 strike outs.
Without 'Mothers little helper', Roberto Clemente hit .357 with 103 strike outs....

Drew Stubbs and Austin Jackson are the only two players who have hit less than 20 home runs while striking out 180 times...

Bobby Bonds and Ryan Howard are the only two players to hit more than .300 while striking out more than 180 times...

Jack Cust and Rob Deer are the only two hitters (whiffers) to have more than 180 strike outs in less than 500 at bats...

Bobby Bonds and Preston Wilson both joined the 30/30 club while whiffing over 180 times...

In 2010, Mark Reynolds strike outs surpassed his batting average...
Reynolds had 211 strike outs and a .198 average
One year later, Adam Dunn showed it could be done with even less strike outs...
Dunn struck out 177 times and hit for a .159 average...

The answer to the question is
Mark Reynolds
Adam Dunn
Drew Stubbs
Ryan Howard
Jack Cust
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
