One Trick Ponies

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue May 01, 2012 9:06 am

Let's take a look at some one trick ponies.....
Or, one category players....Or desperation plays

Batting Average-

Ryan Sweeney is hitting .373....373!
12 of his 25 hits have gone for extra bases.
However, it only amplifies my belief that doubles are closer to singles than home runs.
Sweeney has 11 doubles and zero home runs.
Worse, he has zero stolen bases, only eight rbi, and just seven runs scored.
If it's possible to hit a hollow .373, Ryan Sweeney has accomplished it.

Home Runs-

Pedro Alvarez has five homers. Alvarez is Dave Kingman with less contact.
His five homers have 'produced' nine rbi and seven runs.
Meaning he has been driven in by another Pirates player two times.
Along with zero stolen bases and a .203 batting average
Alvarez 'all or nothing' approach would be better suited for 'Home Run Derby'

RBI-

A little bit of a cheat with our one category rbi guy.
With a .290 batting average, he is a help in two cats.....so far
Jack Hannahan has 14 rbi, but you have to play him at the right times. 10 of those rbi have come during only four games and he's only had one rbi during the last week.
And zero stolen bases....
And worse, despite a homer and those 14 rbi, somehow he has been allergic to home plate himself.
He has scored just three runs.

Stolen Bases-

This one is too easy. Brent Lillibridge has six stolen bases.
Zero homers, zero rbi, .190 batting average, and just four runs scored.
He does however, have 10 strike outs....desperation speed....

Runs-

It is so hard to find somebody involved with scoring a lot of runs, yet not helping in the other four categories.
But, one player has found the magic formula. He has found that getting on base by way of fielders choice or walks, oh, and batting in front of the best player in baseball produces runs.
Mark Ellis has a grand total of two rbi himself this year. Along with zero homers, one sb, and a .247 average, he has been propelled to a one category hitter simply because of Matt Kemp behind him in the lineup.
16 runs scored!
Five more than Dee Gordon.
Which can only prompt owners of Gordon to yell at their tv screens-
"HURRY UP AND STEAL GORDON BEFORE HE FORCES YOU OUT AGAIN!"

Pitchers to come later.....
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
