What's Up, Doc?

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Nov 08, 2012 6:17 pm

I'm not much for copying from sites and displaying it here. Unless, of course, I want to poke fun at the site. This time though, I'm copying to better illustrate a point.
I've found it interesting how the medical industry has invaded baseball.
Telling teams how to get the most out of players.
Telling them how long a rehab wll be.
Telling them whether time or surgery is best for a player or his club.

What got me wondering about these medical staff are a couple of the roto blurbs that have come out lately.
Here's one-

'According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Dan Haren took issue with a report that the Cubs nixed a trade with the Angels last week due to medical issues.
"It’s definitely a little frustrating to hear, being as I’ve started all but three games over a nine-year career," Haren said via email. "I haven’t heard why exactly they pulled out, but I finished the year healthy and did pretty well down the stretch." Haren posted a 4.33 ERA in 30 starts with the Angels this season while dealing with a back issue and showing diminished velocity. David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports that the Cubs were concerned about both his back and his hip. Some teams may shy away this winter after the deal fizzled and the Angels declined his option, but the free agent right-hander insists that he is not a health risk.'

This blurb got me wondering if one team's standards may be higher than another after reviewing x-rays or MRI's.
Or maybe, the Angels know the same thing as the Cubs and aren't commenting. Maybe thet're hoping to find a team with lower standings like the team that they traded another one of their pitchers to, the Kansas City Royals.
It really doesn't matter that Haren has missed only three starts in nine years if his velocity and stuff are wavering.
Some teams lowered standards may lead to more Tommy John's. We don't know and I'm not an investigative reporter.
If I were I'd surely follow up.

Here's the other one that links a little bit with the first blurb-

Royals general manager Dayton Moore downplayed reports that Ervin Santana is dealing with a small ligament tear in his right elbow.
"This is a routine issue that pitchers have," said Moore. "He had an (elbow) issue back in 2009. He’s pitched since then. He’s had MRIs like every other pitcher does at the end of the year. If our medical people hadn’t cleared him, we wouldn’t have done the deal. He’s no different from anyone else who is pitching." Santana posted an ugly 5.17 ERA in 178 innings this season while allowing a major league-high 39 homers, but the Royals picked him up from the Angels last week and will pay him $12 million next season in hopes that he'll rebound.'

The Royals up and coming pitchers all seem to need a TJ before they even throw a Major League pitch and others like Joakim Soria and Danny Duffy make it to the Big Squad, then get Tommy John.
I'll be looking with focused interest on what happens with Haren and Santana this year.
As it looks now, and I could be dead wrong without follow-up, but if my kid were picking between which losing organization to pitch for, the Royals or Cubs.
It looks like the Cubs would have more of HIS best interest in mind.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
