There are always ramifications of a trade that does not pertain to the traded players. The Marlins-Blue Jays deal was huge.
It loaded up Toronto's team with players with Major League experience. The Marlins built for the future.
The outcome for the Marlins, from a fantasy perspective, is that they will have a yard sale at most positions. Players will fill these positions and stay if they produce, if not the Marlins could start bringing up prospects or 'settle' for players like Donny Murphy or Greg Dobbs being the everyday third baseman.
The Blue Jays have a nice problem now. They are stacked. Unless they make a deal before the season begins, they'll have players on their bench that could start for many Major League teams. Colby Rasmus, Rajai Davis, and Adam Lind were not a part of this trade, but they'll be feeling it when spring training begins.
Rasmus has been an under achiever. Both with St. Louis and Toronto. It's fair to say that when thinking of Rasmus, a JD Drew thought may come to mind. It was a make or break year for Rasmus before the trade. The trade gives him a shorter time to play up to his talent level.
Davis and Anthony Gose will be on the bench, hungry to play. A hunger that Rasmus does not display.
Rasmus has gone two years without even topping a .300 on base percentage. He's hit .225 and .223 the last two years.
I expect Rasmus to start in center field for the Jays this year. But, if his play does not improve, the Jays have given themselves options, and the silver spoon that Rasmus has been riding could turn into riding the bench.
Rajai Davis goes from being a starter to a bench player. It would not surprise me to see Davis traded. For some reason, below average fielding judys appeal to some GM's. Davis holds a lot more value as a fantasy player than a real player.
Gose is in much the same position as Davis. He'll be speed coming off the bench. He'll be the guy who 'spells' Rasmus if he slumps and possibly replaces Rasmus if the slump becomes the norm.
Lind has been hit and miss. He's been sent down to the minors even as recently as last year. With the Jays being loaded, Lind has to hit. If he doesn't, he could be thought of as a flash in the pan and either traded or worse, sent to AAA Purgatory.
The Jays have options everywhere. Although these players were not part of that trade, they'll feel it more than the traded players themselves. It'll be something to watch when the season begins.
